Dennis Miller Movies

Point Park College graduate Dennis Miller rose to national fame in 1985 as the new "Weekend Update" commentator on TV's Saturday Night Live. Miller's equal-opportunity bashing of political and showbiz celebrities earned him a reputation as a satirist of the first water; his catchphrase "I'm outta here!" reverberated throughout the land for the next six seasons. The puckish comedian went on to turn out such comedy records as The Off-White Album and to host a batch of irreverent cable-TV specials. In 1994, he co-produced and starred in a nightly chat-fest appropriately titled Dennis Miller Live. Reportedly, certain intrigues involving the booking of guests caused a temporary rift between Miller and his longtime friend--and late-night rival-Jay Leno. Though Dennis Miller Live was unsuccessful, Miller has yet to wear out his welcome on cable TV, where his R-rated, libelous political commentary provides hilarious contrast to the PC japeries of network comics. In films, Dennis Miller has been seen in the Sandra Bullock thriller The Net (1995), and served as star and producer of the "Tales From the Crypt" extravaganza Bordello of Blood (1996). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

More "reality" fare from producer Mark Burnett (Survivor), Amne$ia was one of several quickly-assembled game shows designed to keep the NBC prime-time fires burning during the TV writers' strike of 2007-2008. Described by some critics as a "friendlier" version of the same network's Moment of Truth, Amne$ia obliged its contestants to answer trivia questions about their own lives, as supplied by friends and family members. The more obscure factoids that the contestant was able to remember, the higher the cash prize. To keep the excitement level high, the "blasts from the past" aimed at the players were totally unscripted, meaning that the player couldn't prepare for the game even if he or she tried. Aptly hosted by comedian/political pundit Dennis Miller, who'd built his enitre career upon obscure and sometimes archaic pop-culture references, Amne$ia debuted February 22, 2008. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The man who has made a career out of exposing the artifice and excess of modern living takes a trip to the most artificially excessive city on the planet for his seventh HBO stand-up special. When Dennis Miller takes the stage viewers can rest assured that no topic will be too taboo and no subject over the line, and in this typically scathing look at pop-culture and modern living, Miller addresses a wide variety of issues ranging from gay marriage and global warming to cringe-worthy comb-overs and the presidential aspirations of former first lady Hilary Rodham Clinton. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Dennis Miller rants just as we have come to expect from him about everything and anything. Always controversial, this trip to our nation's capital seems to make him even more feisty than he normally is. Miller tackles such subjects as the presence of women reporters in men's locker rooms, fatherhood, the women of Baywatch, and yes, of course, Politics with a capital P. A must-see for any die-hard Dennis Miller fan. ~ Laura Mahnken, All Movie Guide

The checkered career of a man who has for years pulled off an imposture of being a dentist, despite his disastrous record with patients, is at the center of this offbeat comedy. "Doctor" Gordon Fairweather (Greig Pickhaver) has skipped town just ahead of the British police, who would love to get their hands on him. His story is told by his most loyal patient's daughter Vanessa (Jacqueline McKenzie), who worked as his nurse and wanted to marry him, and by his much-abused patient and potential father-in-law George Prestcott (Patrick Blackwell), who eventually had a mouth only a (real) dentist could love. It seems that Fairweather started out in Australia and had a bit of mental trouble before he struck out for Britain. It is amusing to note that the director of this movie, Chris Kennedy, is himself a former dentist. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

This Australian comedy-fantasy series began as a family called the Trevallers moved from the big city to take charge of a rural coaching inn called the "Help Me Through the World." At first disgruntled over having been uprooted, 13-year-old Julian "Jools" Trevellar (Clayton Williamson) was delighted (sort of) to discover that said inn was haunted by a teenaged ghost, 19th century lass Elinor "Ellie" Lockett (Rebecca Smart). Since only Jools could see or hear Elly, it fell upon him to help the restless spirit solve her long-ago murder. Featured in the cast were Anne Tenney and Peter Fisher as Jools' clueless parents, and Dennis Miller, Damon Herriman, and Vanessa Collier as their zany rustic neighbors, the O'Farrells. The 12-episode Elly & Jools made its Australian TV bow in 1989. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Not yet the erstwhile talkshow host and film actor, Dennis Miller was still doing the "Weekend Update" on Saturday Night Live when he made this concert video. Taped before a DC audience which includes several of the pundits and poobahs that Miller has previously skewered on the air, the video proves that most people are willing to laugh at themselves, even those whose political activities aren't terribly funny. Miller has said on several occasions that he wants to invoke anger from his targets, and hates it when one of his victims makes a public statement praising Miller for his technique, so maybe the gales of laughter from the audience were in themselves a means of getting even. NBC news commentator Edwin Newman shows up at the beginning of the film, purportedly to "prep" Miller. Not rated, the 60-minute Live From Washington It's Dennis Miller bars no holds when it comes to profanity. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A police detective finds that looking into a murder is anything but routine when one of the suspects is the President of the United States. When the nude and bloodied corpse of an attractive woman is found in a bathroom at the White House, Harlan Regis (Wesley Snipes), a top detective with the Washington D.C. police force, is assigned to investigate. However, Regis soon learns that the Secret Service, headed by Nick Spikings (Daniel Benzali), is launching their own investigation, and they want Regis to stay out of their way. While Alvin Jordan (Alan Alda), National Security Advisor to President Jack Neil (Ronny Cox), intervenes in Regis' favor, it becomes obvious that no one wants him poking his nose into a case in which the suspects include both the President and his ill-tempered son Kyle (Tate Donovan). Eventually, Regis finds an ally in Nina Chance (Diane Lane), a member of the Secret Service's team, while the President tries to fend off the investigation in the midst of an international crisis. In this satirical horror-comedy, a gumshoe investigates a combination TV ministry/whorehouse/vampire infestation. After bounty hunter Vincent (Phil Fondacaro) unearths the remains of Lilith, queen of the vampires, he restores the alluring creature to life and lords over her using a magical talisman. Later, rowdy youngster Caleb Verdoux (Corey Feldman) convinces one of his dim-witted buddies to accompany him to a combination mortuary/house of ill repute where both young men fall prey to Lilith's charms. Rather than merely drinking her victims' blood, this vampire has a tendency to rip out their hearts with her projectile tongue. Caleb's sister, Katherine (Erika Eleniak), who works for a large televangelism operation run by the shady Reverend Current (Chris Sarandon), hires private dick Rafe Guttman (Dennis Miller) to track down the errant Caleb. Rafe's wise-guy antics soon get him in trouble with Lilith and the law, but not before he uncovers the ties between Lilith's organization and Current's ministry; it seems Vincent, and therefore Lilith, are working for the reverend. Soon, Rafe finds himself in the boudoir of Lilith's bordello, armed with a holy-water squirt gun and fighting to save Erika from the glamorous but deadly vampire. Like Tales From the Crypt Presents Demon Knight, the previous film spin-off from HBO's EC Comics-inspired Tales From the Crypt series, Bordello of Blood features interludes hosted by the puppet skeleton known as the Crypt Keeper (voice of John Kassir). Director Gilbert Adler, who previously helmed Demon Knight, would go on to produce 13 Ghosts and The House on Haunted Hill. Whoopi Goldberg makes an uncredited cameo as a hospital patient. ~ Brian J.
