A high-class costume drama with a substantive historical basis, Becket is the true story of the friendship between King Henry II (Peter O'Toole) and Thomas à Becket (Richard Burton), a royal courtier and confidant whom Henry appoints as Archbishop of Canterbury. As Becket takes his duties with the Church seriously, he finds himself increasingly at odds with the King, who finally orders the death of his once-close companion when he continues to defy the throne. Burton is very good and O'Toole is even better: both men were nominated for the Best Actor Oscar, while Edward Anhalt's screenplay, based on the stageplay by Jean Anouilh, won for Best Adapted Screenplay. The basic theme of separation of church and state still reverberates today, while the top-notch production values ensure Becket's place as one of Britain's better historical epics. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide

Gentle Art of Murder is comprised of a trio of short crime tales: "The Spider's Web," "The Fenyrou Case" and "The Mask." An international all-star cast appears in these filmed playlets, wherein each perfect murder turns out to be less than perfect. The stories are linked by "bookend" scenes in which an aspiring wife murderer goes to a movie house and watches the three cautionary tales unreel. Nearly three hours long, Gentle Art of Murder holds both the audience--and the would-be killer--in thrall. In this romantic comedy, a ship load of the rich and horny embark on a cruise aboard a millionaire's yacht. Included in the guest roster are a French businessman, his singing wife, his mistress, his wife's lover, a count whom the businessman hired to sleep with his wife so he can get a divorce, the boat owner's lover and his son, a lovely model hired by the owner to seduce his son who seems alarmingly disinterested in women, and a photographer to record it all. In this sword and sandal epic set during Rome's attack on ancient Greece, both the Roman and Carthaginian armies are battling for possession of Syracuse. Brave Archimedes is assigned to head the defense of the city. He is temporarily distracted after his lover gets pregnant and her evil step-brother takes her to Roman soldiers. The experience affects her so deeply that she loses her memory. She then marries a Roman dignitary. Archimedes also marries and many years pass. Now the Greek hero must head for Rome to form a new alliance. There he sees his long-lost love. She sees him too and instantly regains her memory, but to spare her son unnecessary grief, she does not tell her son. Later the Romans renege and again attack Syracuse. This time, the Roman fleet is destroyed and so are the respective spouses of the star-crossed lovers. Finally freed of their constraints the two marry, but for the sake of their son, they still restrain from telling him the truth about his father. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

French comedian Fernandel stars in this entertaining comedy based on a short story by O. Henry, The Ransom of Red Chief. Antoine (Fernandel) has the brilliant idea of kidnapping the son of a millionaire in order to raise the money he and his partner Paolo (Gino Cervi) need to buy their own auto repair shop. The kidnapping is quite successful but Antoine and Paolo soon discover that little Erick (Papouf) is more than just a handful. Even when Antoine dresses up as a Native American, Erick is not amused for long. The little boy is trouble incarnate, and soon the erstwhile kidnappers are ready to pay for his parents to take him back. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Juvenile actor Joel Flateau is the center of attention in Sans Familie (Nobody's Boy). Heir to a fortune, the young protagonist is kidnapped by an unscrupulous uncle who wants to put the boy out of the way and thereby get his own mitts on the money. The villain turns the kid over to an assassin (Pierre Brasseur), who hasn't the heart to murder the wide-eyed moppet. Thus, the boy is left in the care of a happy-go-lucky travelling troubadour (Gino Cervi), and thus begins a series of delightful misadventures. This minor Italian comedy was released in the U.S. as Wives and Obscurities. Gino Cervi and Walter Chiari star as an American immigrant and his son who return to Cervi's Italian hometown after 35 years. While the girls in town are fascinated by Chiari's sophisticated veneer, the local males resent his Yankee behavior and target him for persecution and humiliation. Ultimately, Chiari is forced to stand up to his Italian tormentors and prove he's as good as any of them without hiding behind his fancy American convertible and flashy clothes.
