Director Diego de la Texera's magic realist fable Meteoro (AKA Meteorite, 2006) unfolds in April 1960, at the time of Brasilia's inauguration as the new capital of Brazil. As de la Texera's film opens, the Brazilian government orders the construction of a major highway between Brasilia and the remainder of the country. The work crew assigned to build the stretch between Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza must labor in a severely underdeveloped, barren region, surrounded by thousands of square miles of uninhabited Brazilian wilderness. Each month, the government office in charge of the crew sends provisions to the unsupervised workers, including a cadre of prostitutes known as "Madam's Girls." The unit's condition nonetheless deteriorates ever further, until - on the night of a military coup d'etat - a yellow meteorite streaks across the sky and hits the ground, causing a fountain to open. Soon after, Julião, a Brazilian Indian, turns up and teaches the workers how to draw on the practices of the ancients to decode the messages written in the stars. Together, the workers establish a village, christen it 'Meteoro,' and live there contentedly until a Brazilian military helicopter turns up. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
This crazy Brazilian sex comedy follows the revealing travails of Professor Silvio Proenca, a noted Brazilian folklorist from Rio who through a series of mishaps finds himself the most notorious and hunted man in his country. His odyssey begins when the middle-aged academic's beautiful wife Marina refuses to accompany him to Sao Paulo to promote his latest book. At the airport, Proenca hears the irresistible sounds of folk music drifting down a corridor. He investigates and finds a group of old friends, including the sexy Marialva. Rainstorms cancel the flight and the friends go out for a few drinks and then more drinks at her house. Eventually, the revellers depart, leaving only Marialva and the professor who by then is totally potted. He is a man of habits, and the next morning he absently arises and goes into the apartment building hallway to get freshly delivered bread only to hear the door shut and lock behind him. Poor Proenca finds himself stranded with nothing on but a horrified look. When the neighbors see him, they chase him into the street where he is seen and hailed a pervert. Soon Proenca must not only flee from passersby, but also a SWAT team, police dogs, the press and Marialva, the only one interested in saving him. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

While driving his cab one evening, Daniel (Jose Mayer) is set upon by two robbers. He succeeds in driving them off, killing them in the process. It is somehow entirely understandable that he doesn't inform the police of this incident, but merely changes his drive shift to the daytime. He is supporting a wife and son, and there is no telling what the authorities would make of the incident. Later, Daniel's wife (Christiane Torloni) gets chosen as an extra when location shots are being filmed for a popular soap opera. This leads to her eventually becoming a television star herself - and leaving her husband and son in the process. In this melodrama, Daniel decides he is not going to bear this insult quietly, and plots an appropriate revenge. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

All three of the main female characters in this film were performed by Lucella Santos. The three women in question all live around a plaza in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, and none of them is aware of the others. Though their adult responses to deeply flawed childhoods are very different, each of them was abandoned in a very hurtful way by their fathers. One sleeps around incessantly, for no particular reason. Another has become the captive of her overzealous mother, and the last has become an extraordinarily jealous harpy, even though her kindly husband does nothing to provoke her in any way. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In a fictional story that exaggerates and condenses historical realities for the sake of dramatic impact, an isolated, quiet village of the Avaete people along the Amazon River is attacked by murderous psychos in the pay of a corrupt politician. Villagers are strafed from the air, bombed, and shot while trying to escape. To emphasize the gore, a woman is hung and quartered. The horrified cook of the marauders grabs a five-year-old Avaete boy, and they manage to escape into the jungle. The rest of the story is a series of coincidences that eventually bring a final confrontation between the grown-up boy -- who has vowed revenge for these killings -- and the politician behind the massacre. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This semi-autobiographical comedy-drama is the second of a trilogy by director David Neves who takes a look at life on the wild (or at least casual) side in Rio de Janeiro. Bruno (Claudio Marzo) hangs out with a group of free-wheeling dilettantes with two guiding passions in life: doing nothing whenever possible, and sex. A porno filmmaker (Roberto Bonfim) focuses on the latter avocation, while Herminio (Flavio Sao Thiago) focuses on the former. While pursuing both of these passions, Bruno begins an affair with a widow in her 30s and everything seems to be going well -- until he sees her teen-age daughter (nicknamed Fulaninha by his buddies) and it's love at first sight. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

On the eve of the October, 1930 installation of Getulio Vargas as a dictator in Brazil, a leader of the opposition Liberal Alliance Party was murdered. This imaginative and well-wrought, fictional film is about the indirect involvement of Anayde Beiriz (Tania Alves) in that murder, but rather than focus on the political consequences, the film concentrates on the personality and character of the woman herself. Anayde was not bound by puritanical or religious restrictions in her relationships with men, and so her affair with the journalist Joao Dantes (Claudio Marzo) was sexually liberated for its time. Dantas had tight political connections with the military head of the Republican Party, making his own politics clear - what is less clear is the motivation for his subsequent actions. When the leader of the Liberal Alliance Party invades Dantas' apartment and makes public intimate letters and photographs of his relationship with Anayde, the journalist tracks down the man in a restaurant, and kills him. Since the dictator Vargas was supported by Dantas and considered a fascist by many, the underlying questions about Anayde are whether or not she could be considered "liberated," or was she simply a product of one time, one political outlook, and one place? ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

The torturing of prisoners in the 1970s is the focus of this film that was banned in Brazil, and banned at Cannes or in private screening rooms by the head of the Embrafilme studios who paid for Pra Frente Brazil. The former head of the studio was fired for making the film. The story concerns a man who is picked up by the police because they mistake him for a terrorist. As he is brutalized in a dungeon-like setting, the people in the streets are celebrating Brazil winning the 1970 World Soccer Cup in Mexico. In this story of mistaken identity, the torturing is laid at the feet of paramilitary forces hired by a corporate world to fend off guerrilla attacks on their properties and persons. This did not sit well with the Brazilian leftists who complained that no word was said against the government using torture, or about the fact that it still goes on. The movie also did not sit well with the rightists who do not like torture portrayed against a paramilitary group that might as well stand in for one of their organizations, and the film certainly did not meet the approval of the government. That leaves a few film critics, who seem to think that the director Roberto Farias - and the group of his relatives who contributed in various ways to the film, did a rather decent job of it, as far as filmmaking goes. This movie won the Gramado Film Festival prize in 1982. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Director Alberto Graca has tried to re-create the environment in Brazil upon the return to civilian, party politics after more than 10 years of military rule. The opposition to military rule now spends its time in power struggles and temporary alliances as factions and parties vie for a place at the top of the ladder. None of the in-fighting among the maze of protagonists can be accomplished without extensive discussions -- a classic Latino approach that seems to be as much a part of the culture as language itself. Some viewers without enough background may find the multiple characters and political complexities a little hard to follow. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
