The made-for-cable musical satire Reefer Madness is based on the award-winning play of the same name, which in turn was inspired by the notorious -- and deliciously awful -- 1936 anti-marijuana film originally titled Tell Your Children. A smarmy lecturer (Alan Cumming in the first of his three roles in the film) arrives in a typical small town of the late '30s to warn the populace of the dangers of the "evil weed," bringing along a lurid propaganda film to dramatize his message. In broad, unsubtle, and hilarious strokes, the movie-within-a-movie shows how even a squeaky-clean pair of highschoolers named Mary Lane (Kristen Bell) and Jimmy Harper (Christian Campbell) can become hopeless dope addicts by succumbing to the lure of marijuana. Reefer Madness is not only a savage skewering of the original black-and-white movie (some of the musical's campiest lines are taken directly from the earlier script!), but also a devastating attack on what playwrights Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney consider to be the real reason that the 1936 movie was made: to frighten the public out of their wits in order to keep them under the thumb of an oppressive government. Thus, the musical manages to take a number of not-so-veiled swipes at xenophobia, racism, McCarthyism, the Bush Administration's Homeland Security policy, and even the recent FCC clampdown on "offensive" TV fare (one of the film's highlights is a garish nightclub number featuring Jesus Christ). The ebulliently staged songs include "The Stuff," "Down at the Ol' Five and Dime," "Lonely Pew," "Listen to Jesus Jimmy," "Mary Jane/Mary Lane," "The Brownie Song," "Tell 'Em the Truth," and the title number. Four recent high school graduates are questioned following a mysterious forest fire, and each one's story offers a different take on the previous evening's escapades in director Amy Snow's Rashomon-structured comedy drama starring Cabin Fever's Rider Strong. On the eve of their high school graduation, four teens decide to celebrate their freedom by partying the night away in the woods. When the morning sun rises on a scorched landscape, the teens are interrogated by an angered forest ranger who is dead certain that one of them is responsible for the rampaging fire. Though each one of the teens denies that they set the fire and each of their stories offer different accounts of the hazy evening, the truth is bound to surface as the tension rises in the cramped quarters of the forest ranger's station. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

After his girlfriend dumps him and his family moves to Northern California from the East Coast, 15-year-old Jed (Milo Ventimiglia) encounters further misery when his parents enroll him in Evergreen Academy, a former all-girls school that has just started to admit boys. Although Jed's other two male classmates don't see any problem with the fortuitous girl to boy ratio, they are forced to reconsider their feelings when most of the Evergreen students make it all too clear that they don't want boys at their school. Jed and his friends decide not to give in to pressure, particularly when they find an ally in Miranda (Margot Finley), a junior for whom Jed harbors a strong crush. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

For once, a kid from the science club really does impress someone with his latest experiment, though it hardly works out the way he planned in this horror opus with a darkly comic undertow. Frank Stein (Matthew Lawrence) is a brilliant but geeky teenage outcast who wishes he could hang out with the cool kids and has a furious crush on Macy (Christine Lakin), the prettiest girl at school. Socially inept Frank isn't especially popular with his classmates, but there's one student who fares even worse -- Karl (Ryan Reynolds), a goth kid who is a magnet to bullies. One day, a gang of jocks decide to beat up Karl for fun, but they go too far and accidentally kill him. Frank, seeing an opportunity, decides to prove just how bright he is by bringing Karl back to life. Frank's peers are indeed impressed by the reanimated Karl (whose presence allows them to avoid murder charges), and Macy starts showing an encouraging interest in Frank, but there's one little problem -- Frank replaced Karl's damaged brain with one from a psychotic multiple murderer, and soon gloomy Karl is displaying an uncharacteristic thirst for violence. Also released under the title Big Monster on Campus, Boltneck also stars Judge Reinhold and Shelley Duvall. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
