A beautiful woman is suddenly forced to rely on her wits on a cold night in December in this character study from Germany. Valerie (Agata Buzek) was a successful fashion model when she was living in Paris in her mid-twenties, but now she's turned thirty and her career is not what it used to be. With her bank account empty, Valerie can no longer afford the fancy hotel room that had been her home for several months, or even get her car out of their underground parking garage. The photographer who discovered Valerie and was her lover for years (Birol Unel) has found a new protégé and isn't interested in her anymore, while Valerie's agent (Sabine Vitua) tells her in no uncertain terms her career is probably over. While she's able to use her looks and charm to persuade Andre (Devid Streisow), a parking attendant, to let her sleep in her car, she finds herself essentially homeless in Berlin with Christmas just around the corner. Valerie can still turn heads with the right dress and make-up, but with no cash or practical skills, she's forced to turn to others to supply her with food, drinks and cigarettes, and flirts with the idea of prostitution in order to support herself. A summer trip to Berlin offers a fleeting glimpse into the lives of the country's youth in this vibrant, character-driven drama from director Martin Gypkens. When twentysomething Florian arrives in town to pay a visit to long-lost pal Pit, the duo quickly reminisce before heading out to a party. Tracing the source of some Talaxian messages, Neelix (Ethan Phillips) locates a colony of his own people on an asteroid -- which happens to be in the thick of a devastating war fomented by greedy miners. Now he is forced to make a momentous choice between his Neelix heritage and his loyalty to Voyager. Without giving away the ending, it can be noted that this episode represented Ethan Phillips' final series appearance. Robert Conrad plays Jesse Hawkes, a retired mountain ranger. Hawkes is reactivated to track down a killer in the Sierra mountains. He does so with the aid of his sons -- played by Conrad's real-life sons Christian and Shane (the actor's daughter Joan was executive producer of this film). Shot on location in California and Nevada, High Mountain Rangers served as the pilot for a Robert Conrad TV series (his ninth) which ran from January to July of 1988. When the series failed to bring in the ratings, the format was altered and the title changed to Jesse Hawkes; that series lasted all of four weeks in 1989. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
