Writer/director John Stewart pays tribute to the golden age of British horror -- when Hammer Films and Amicus Productions ruled the grind-houses -- in this classically styled frightfest. Jenny (Steffanie Pitt) is a young woman who has been having horrible nightmares in which she revisits the murder of her mother when she was only six years old. Desperate to free herself from her traumatic past, Jenny and her boyfriend William (Nick Waring) visit the mental institution that Jenny's father (Patrick Mower) oversaw when she was a child. But Jenny soon discovers her dreams were prescient in a way she never imagined, as a killer begins to lay waste to the asylum's inmates and staff. The Asylum's supporting cast includes Ingrid Pitt, who starred in a number of classic British horror films and is also the mother of leading lady Steffanie Pitt. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Ellis Peters' 12th-century monk who finds time in his daily devotionals to ferret out crime comes alive in this made-for-TV drama. A young man named Meriet (Christian Anholt) arrives at Shrewsbury Abbey eager to become a novice, but Brother Cadfael (Derek Jacobi) somehow doubts the boy's good intentions, and a Senior Cleric decides to take a look into his past. When the Cleric turns up dead, Meriet confesses to the murder, but once Cadfael learns more about the young man's troubled history, he wonders if Meriet might be offering himself as a sacrifice to cover someone else's tracks. Brother Cadfael: The Devil's Novice also features Terence Hardiman and Mark Charnock; the drama was originally shown in the U.S. as part of the PBS series Mystery! ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
When an American socialite's husband dies, she is faced with running the business the two have successfully created--a vast jewelry empire--together with staving off the petty jealousies and rivalries she has with her siblings. Of course, there is also romance off in the wings, or it wouldn't be a Danielle Steel novel, would it? ~ Tana Hobart, All Movie Guide
A vacation in Scotland turns into hard work for Michael Cooper, a former Chicago policeman, when he runs into an engaging but nervous Englishman who appears as out of place as the American in a little Scottish fishing village. After the two become friendly, the ex-policeman learns the cause of the other man's nervousness: his daughter has been kidnapped by a criminal gang which is hoping to use her abduction in order to find the old man, who has been on the run from them for some time. Before long, Michael charges in to the rescue. This fairly tame action drama offers old-time fans of comic Norman Wisdom a chance to see him in a "straight" role. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
