His uncle intervenes, offers to bring him up, and his life was saved. Forced to return to his family's grudging attentions after the early death of his protector, he overcomes many obstacles. For instance, during floods arising from typhoons, he is twice left to drown, and only intervention by one of his brothers (the first time) and by his girlfriend (the second) enables him to be rescued. The boy went on to achieve academic excellence, wrote a best-selling autobiography, and gave inspirational talks to other handicapped children.
