International martial arts superstar Jackie Chan directed and choreographed (along with veterans Corey Yuen and Fung Hark-on) this action-packed follow-up to The Young Master. Chan also stars as Dragon, a rebellious young man who is always getting into trouble along with his best friend, Cowboy (Feng Sing). The friends soon meet Tiger (Michael Chan), a desperate man in hiding from the Chinese Imperial Guardsmen who conspired with him to steal a number of priceless artifacts from the Forbidden City. Tiger's fellow guardsmen were intending to sell the treasures to foreign interests and divide the money, but Tiger left before the transaction could be completed. What neither Tiger nor Cowboy knows is that the Captain of the Guards (Whang Ing-sik) is working in collaboration with the latter's corrupt father to pull off the illicit deal. Tiger goes back and purloins some of the artifacts, escaping with the guards in hot pursuit, as they need a complete collection to maintain their agreement with the buyers. Dragon and Cowboy remain blissfully unaware of the situation and give Tiger a place to seek shelter, only to face the wrath of the Captain and his men when their hiding place is discovered. Stand-out sequences include the final battle between Dragon and the Captain inside a large barn and a scene in which the precariously perched Dragon tries to keep from falling off a steep roof as the guards stick sharp spears through it from below. In this martial arts action-drama, Wang Chung (Chen Hui-Min) is a hooligan for hire working with a Triad gang when he decides to leave his life of crime behind him. Gangster leader Lo isn't interested in letting Wang Chung go, and so he commits a series of heinous killings, and then fabricates evidence to suggest Wang Chung is the murderer. Judgement of an Assassin is most noteworthy for expanding the number and kinds of martial arts used in onscreen battles. In the story, Heh Mo-li (David Chiang) is hard-pressed to keep his lady-love Shih Ming-chu (Ching Li) out of the hands of the bad guys. In a related story, Cha Hung and Hua Szu Ku (Ku Feng and Wang Lai) are an elderly unmarried couple. Both of them are swordfighters. Kenny Bee is a shy young man whose wealthy parents want him to marry, no matter what. Although he goes to Waikiki with his friend Lolantho (Chen Pai-chiang), neither manage to succeed with women and when they return home, the anxious parents now have another problem: someone is embezzling money from the family's corporate business. In order to flush out the thief, the introverted son poses as Lolantho's chauffeur - and in that guise, the two come across a pair of gorgeous women they met in Waikiki (Cherie Chung and Maggie Cheung - both former Miss Hong Kong title holders). Mix-ups and misunderstandings abound, as well as some dirty-dealing from the suspected embezzler, but love is unerringly true and although Cupid's arrow might be briefly deflected, it ultimately hits the right target. Although it looks more like an independent kung fu film of the era, this film was one of a long string of kung fu programmers from Shaw Brothers. Shaolin Handlock takes a traditional kung fu plot and spices it up with some novel gimmickry. When Li Bai (Dick Wei) is murdered in China, his son Cheng-ying (David Chiang) tracks the killer to Thailand and discovers that the murder was ordered by wealthy businessman Lin Hao (Lo Lieh). Cheng-ying gets a job as Lin Hao's bodyguard as he plots his revenge, only to find himself regularly thwarted by Kun Shi (Hui-Min Chen), a jealous rival guard. Things get more complex when Cheng-ying's sister Meng-ping (Chen Ping) comes to Thailand to join in the revenge plot and Cheng-ying discovers some hidden secrets about Lin Hao's marriage. Shaolin Handlock derives its title from a secret kung fu technique developed by Cheng-ying's father. This technique combined with some of the weapons used by Lin Hao and his operatives give the film a comic book feel that has endeared it to many a kung fu film fan. ~ Donald Guarisco, All Movie Guide
