Controversial Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berluscoi is just one of the targets of writer and director Nanni Moretti's satiric focus in this sharp comedy-drama. In the 1970's, Bruno (Silvio Orlando) was one of Italy's most daring and best-respected filmmakers, while his wife Paola (Margherita Buy) was a leading box-office star. However, come the new millennium, things are a whole lot different for Bruno -- Paola is divorcing him, his production company is on the verge of bankruptcy, and he can't get a new project off the ground. When Teresa (Jasmine Trinca), a young woman down on her luck, approaches Bruno with a script, he agrees to take on the project, even though he hasn't read it and doesn't know how he'll raise the money. Bruno discovers he's put himself in hot water when he reads the screenplay and discovers it's a frontal assault on Silvio Berluscoi that doesn't shy away from allegations of his connection to organized crime, tax evasion, bribery and influence peddling. While Italian firms won't dare touch the project, Bruno discovers a Polish financier (Jerzy Stuhr) who will put up the money, but under one condition -- Bruno has to persuade box-office idol Marco Pulici (Michele Placidio) to play Berluscoi. Il Caimano (aka The Caiman) received its North American premier at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Adapted from William Trevor's novella of the same name, the made-for-cable My House in Umbria stars Dame Maggie Smith as Mrs. Emily Delahunty, a British romance novelist living in Italy. While on a shopping excursion to Milan, Emily barely survives a terrorist train bombing. Though she recovers fairly rapidly from her ordeal, three others -- a German journalist a British general and a traumatized orphan girl -- still bear profound physical and emotional wounds. In the spirit of democracy and compassion, the pluck Mrs. Delahunty invites her fellow survivors to recuperate at her lavish Italian estate. This ersatz family gets along famously -- at least until the arrival of the orphan's priggish uncle, American entomologist Tom Riversmith (Chris Cooper), who strongly disapproves of Mrs. Delahunty's carefree lifestyle. Filmed on location in Tuscany and Rome, My House in Umbria debuted May 25, 2003, on the HBO cable service. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A single parent finds out the hard way that his daughter isn't as angelic as he thought in this comedy from Italy. Lorenzo Caruso (Francesco Nuti) is a successful psychoanalyst whose wife died when their daughter Giulia was an infant. Since then Lorenzo has gone out of his way to raise Giulia in a positive and nurturing manner, while using his status as a single parent to prevent his (many) relationships with women from ever becoming too close. Lorenzo is convinced the now-teenage Giulia (Giulia Serafini) is a model child, but he gets a wake-up call when a police officer stops by his home to inform him that Giulia was picked up for shoplifting along with a group of her friends. Shocked, Lorenzo begins to imagine his daughter has a corrupt other life she's kept hidden from him, and he begins spying on her during the day, while occasionally rummaging through her room when she's not around. One day, he discovers a package of condoms in Giulia's book bag, and goes into a panic, imagining the worst about her sex life. Leading man Francesco Nuti also directed Caruso, Zero in Condotta, as well as co-authoring the screenplay. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A woman who is tried of being pushed around discovers the alternative isn't all she thought it might be in this provocative comedy. Claudia (Antonella Ponziani) is a woman in her early thirties who works as a production assistant on a popular talk show, though she doesn't much care for her job. Claudia also isn't so thrilled with her boyfriend Giovanni (Mario De Candia), especially since he's invited a large percentage of his free-thinking extended family to stay at their apartment -- his divorced parents (Macha Meril and Piero Natoli), his sister and her kids, and his father's new significant other (Tasha Rodrigues). To make matters worse, Giovanni is an actor who has been between jobs for some time, and Claudia is the only person living in the flat who has a steady income and a willingness to perform household maintenance. The stresses of both work and her home life are taking a toll on Claudia, who is suffering from a number of minor ailments. Giovanni's mother, a follower of New Age healing techniques, is convinced Claudia's problems are psychosomatic, and when she teaches her a way of ridding her mind of debilitating energies, Claudia is transformed into a new woman. But Giovanni's family soon discovers that the newly empowered Claudia isn't about to put up with them, while Claudia finds her new emotional strength only lasts for so long. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The English title of this complex Italian film is apt. Featuring 65 main characters and 130 speaking parts (famous faces abound and many of the actors appeared gratis), and ranging in tone from tartly humorous to darkly tragic, it presents 30 interwoven slices from the lives of modern day Romans during a single day. The lone, silent figure of a lone jogger provides a sort of continuity between the vignettes. Beginning at sunset of the previous day, the jogger is seen warming up on his apartment terrace, looking for all the world as if he would like to jump. The rest of the stories seem to be randomly presented. Stories include the robbery of a Chinese restaurant that causes a birthday celebrant to die of fright, two different newlyweds who find themselves attracted to each other, an opportunistic mechanic's plan to capitalize on the death of a rival, a sneaky, sadistic meter maid and others. One uniting feature of the stories is their underlying bitter assessment of modern humanity. People are seen as selfish and basically cruel, still the stories move quickly and the balance between humor and drama, affection and cynicism, and shallowness and complexity is carefully maintained. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
