Originally Vory v Zakone, this uncompromising Russian drama takes place during the Brezhnev years, when corruption reigned unchecked. Anna Samokhina plays a mob moll caught in the middle of a blood feud between gangsters Boris Scherbakov and Arnis Licitis. Bartender Vladimir Steklov, who loves Samokhina, tries to help her out, to no avail. The on-the-take cops aren't much use either; they're more preoccupied with framing one of their own to keep him from informing on his colleagues. Kings of Crime was adapted from two short stories by Fazil Iskander. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Based on a semi-autobiographical novel by Yuri Bondarev, this romantic drama starts at the close of World War II near Hamburg, where Nikitin (Boris Shcherbakov), a lieutenant in the Soviet army, is temporarily stationed. Nikitin meets a German teenager named Emma (Natalya Belochvostikova), and the two have a brief, intense affair before he has to leave for home. Many years later, Nikitin is visiting Hamburg by invitation of his German publisher -- where he meets Emma once more because she has been asked to translate for him. The old flame flares up again as the now-married, ex-lovers reminisce about the past without indulging their feelings. In reality, more emotion is invested on the war than on the love between the protagonists, causing romantic passion to be detoured, if not derailed. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Igor (Vladimir Gostioukhin), a young miner, becomes romantically involved with Sonia (Irina Dymtchenko) while they are both on vacation at a seaside resort. Unfortunately, Sonia reveals that she is not only a married woman, but also an expectant mother. Igor is undaunted by this news and keeps after Sonia, completely unaffected by the reactions of her husband and family. In the end, Sonia relents and leaves her basically unsatisfactory marriage to pursue a life with Igor. Once the couple is together, Sonia begins to have second thoughts as she sees her newfound, independent thinking as something of an asset -- and looks at Igor with more open eyes than in the past. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
