A popular French comic strip of the 1950s becomes a candy-colored feature film in this race-car adventure. Writer-director Michel Blanc, whose previous works include the acclaimed Marche a l'ombre (1984) and Dead Tired (1994), creates this gritty drama about a middle-aged impoverished French writer in London who becomes a gigolo. The film opens with Pierre (Daniel Auteuil) getting worked over by an irate pimp because he didn't pay for a hooker's drink. Rakish Irishman Tom (Stuart Townsend) offers to drive bloodied Pierre back to his seedy hotel. The following day, he stumbles upon Tom's sandwich bar and begs for a job. Though he describes himself as a dead-broke author working on a novel, Pierre is concealing secrets from his dark past. Later, during a party populated with well-turned out lesbians, Tom reveals that he moonlights as a gigolo and suggests that Pierre might try the same. Soon Pierre is making easy money at the same agency where Tom works. Things get complicated for our Gallic protagonist when he falls for a golden-hearted streetwalker with a psychotic ex-boyfriend and one of his married regulars falls for him. The sexploits of a nerd are chronicled in this French film. Francois is a thirty-five year old playwright working on his autobiographical play "The Indecisive Guy". He is not a terribly interesting man, but he does manage to have a series of great sexual liaisons with a variety of experienced and inexperienced women. The personal tragedy of an alcoholic hemmed in by a domineering wife is the focus of this drama of hope lost and regained. Simon (Christophe Malavoy) is a solo violinist in an orchestra managed by his wife Laura (Jane Birkin). Haunted by specters of his own inadequacy, he loses his insecurities in drink, but that only results in rejection from his fellow musicians. They do not want him playing in the next major concert, which puts Laura in a bind. She fights for him to continue playing, not realizing that he may actually need time off. Simon begins to turn himself around when he meets a recovering alcoholic who introduces him to AA-style meetings and new friends. They understand his problem from their own perspective, yet he still has his increasingly belligerent wife and his future as a musician to handle. This standard erotic thriller set in St. Tropez involves an unusual ménage à trois first there is Claude, a mother approaching 40 who is also approaching a liaison with the second and pivotal figure in the trio; Romain (Bernard Giraudeau), a Don Juan who is not above pimping on occasion and who is also attracted to Claude; and thirdly, the neurotic Chris (Valèrie Kaprisky), Claude's sexually fixated young daughter. As flashbacks show Chris seducing a former lover and symbolism likens her to a jellyfish whose sting can be fatal, the scenario is set for real trouble -- especially since Chris is angered that Romain obviously avoids her and just as obviously will end up as her mother's lover.
