In this romantic comedy, two guys who've discovered Age 30 in their rear-view mirror try to unravel the mysteries of life and love in beautiful Saskatchewan. Sam (Michael Goorjian) is a guy in his late 20s who is looking for the woman of his dreams but isn't having much luck. His best friend Jim (David Lovgren) isn't nearly as fussy as Sam; he'll take a chance on any woman that seems moderately attractive, especially ones that Sam has expressed an interest in. Sam likes to pass himself off as a moody intellectual, but this act doesn't get him very far with Kelly (Chandra West), an insurance investigator who seems a bit flaky on the surface but soon works her way into Sam's heart. However, Jim, true to form, has to make a play for her as well. Jennifer Beals appears in a supporting role as a waitress who gives Sam lessons in how to sound deep and pretentious. Adapted by John Robert Hoffman from his own play, the made-for-TV Northern Lights stars Diane Keaton as Roberta Blumstein, a high-strung New Yorker whose well-ordered lifestyle is set on its ear with the arrival of a child. No, not Roberta's child, but the son of her recently deceased brother Frank. The kid's name is Jack, and he is no more fond of Roberta than she is of him--at least, not at first. Gradually, however, the two lost souls come to find each other in the most unlikeliest of places: A quaint New England community that Roberta would under normal circumstances have never been caught dead in. Although the original play was a one-character monologue, the TV version features scores of eccentric and lovable supporting characters--among them one Joe Scarlotti, played by author Hoffman, and Ben Rubadue, portrayed by Maury Chaykin, the star of the Diane Keaton-directed theatrical feature Unstrung Heroes. Set in beautiful British Columbia, Canada, this magical family tale centers on a divorced radio talk show psychiatrist who has been so immersed in his career that he has neglected his two kids, Ashley and Josh. To rectify the situation, he takes them to a beautiful lakeside cabin in Glenorky, BC, the supposed home of a giant mythological reptilian monster. Though he has ostensibly come to spend time with the kids, the lure of working on his book is too strong and soon he is locked away in the cabin amidst papers, a cellular phone and a lap-top, busily clacking away while the children head out to explore. It is Ashley who first sees the mythical monster. She tells her dad, and of course, he initially disbelieves her, but the girl seems so earnest that he begins to wonder. His investigation of the matter leads him down a magical road to reconciliation with his children and the rediscovery that there is a wonderful life outside of his career.
