For Astarlos, living in Madrid at the time of the troubled rule of Isabel the Second in 1868, fencing is not an outmoded method of personal combat, but it is a way of life. It teaches lessons about comportment, attention, responsiveness to others, and taking responsibility for one's own life. Further, it is an aristocratic art, and the heart of aristocratic sentiment (no matter what one's station of life at birth) is to take responsibility for those who are less fortunate than oneself. Noblesse oblige. In this drama, the fencing master seeks to remain true to his values during a turbulent time which imperils his student's lives. One student is a beautiful and mysterious young woman, another is a handsome lad of aristocratic birth. Among the outsiders impinging on their lives are a police inspector and a passionate revolutionary. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

After the death of Carlos II in 1700, the throne of Spain was up for grabs, and all the European powers got involved. Even after the next king was crowned, anarchy and poverty marred the lives of the Spanish for many years. Finally, Carlos III, attempted to bring significant reforms with the assistance of his minister, the Marques de Esquilache. This film, based on the play Un Sonador Para Un Pueblo by Antonio Buero Vallejo, portrays the struggles of Esquilache (Fernando Fernan Gomez) to implement his monarch's vision for Spain. Despite touching on many issues in Spanish history, it's really more of a character study of the title character. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Set in Barcelona at the end of the 1950s, this melodrama revolves around a swaggering, petty criminal who tries to impress with his motorcycle skills and black leathers as he seduces one of the servants in a wealthy family and then goes after the blond daughter of the household. His plans are destroyed when the servant becomes hospitalized and eventually dies of unknown causes, catalyzing the rich family to send their daughter away and go after the young hoodlum to end his days of delinquency. Undistinguished in its script and the interpretations of the main protagonists, this film does not hold attention securely enough to keep it from slipping. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Set in the world of high fashion and played out against the backdrops of Madrid and the scenic coastal resort town of Estoril, this routine romantic farce revolves around assumed and fake identities. First there is the sophisticated, articulate count and his free spirit twin brother (Alberto Closas in both roles). Then there is the haute-couture model and a suspiciously look-alike fake countess (Zully Moreno in both parts). Once people start mistaking the count and the fake countess for their identical counterparts and vice-versa, the comedic situations become increasingly complex if not occasionally confusing. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Taking its title from the dance craze of the era, this routine, 1920s romantic comedy stars Mexico's popular Silvia Pinal as Beatriz, a woman whose troubles are brought on by the fact that she has two wildly different suitors. Her fiancé (Pastor Serrador) is a well-placed, cultured though timid individual with an interest in modern abstract art. Her other boyfriend (Alberto Closas) is a macho playboy type and, needless to say, the two men do not appreciate each other's claims on Beatriz.
