Megan Follows, who literally grew up before the viewers' eyes as star of the Canadian TV series Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea, returns to the role of Lucy Maud Montgomery's plucky Canadian lass Anne Shirley in this four-hour TV miniseries. In the second decade of the 20th century, all grown up and a professional schoolteacher, Anne returns to Prince Edward Island after the death of her mentor, Marilla Cutherbert (played by the late Coleen Dewhurst in stock-footage flashbacks). Soon thereafter, Anne heads to New York City, intending to marry her physician fiancé, Gilbert Blythe (Jonathan Crombie), and, hopefully, to find success as an author. Alas, Anne's first manuscript is stolen by charming scoundral, Jack Garrison Jr. (Cameron Daddo), while Gilbert is defeated by the internal politicking and red tape of a big-city hospital. The couple is about to relocate to their native Canada when WWI breaks out, whereupon Gilbert dutifully signs up for military service. When word arrives that Gilbert is missing in action, Anne courageously heads off to wartorn France in hopes of finding her husband -- only to become mixed up in an espionage plot that also involves the redoubtable Jack Garrison. Originally telecast in Canada beginning March 5, 2000, Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story was seen in the United States courtesy of PBS on July 23 and 30, 2000. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This television series follows the adventures of four teenagers who in their spare time help to serve their community as volunteer emergency medical technicians (EMT's). Hank (Danso Gordon), the son of a successful surgeon, is eager to prove that he has talents of his own. Jamie (Christopher Ralph) is a boy with a checkered past who is under court order to perform community service, which he approaches with a certain reluctance, but also an awareness that this may be his last chance to turn his life around. Val (Reagan Pasternak) is a bright, ambitious girl who wants to be a doctor someday. And Tyler (Shawn Ashmore) uses a cheerful disposition and enthusiastic attitude to camouflage the fact that he doesn't get along with his family. As the four youngsters balance school and their responsibilities as EMT's, they also have to deal with the trials and tribulations of growing up, and Val has to contend with her cynical friend Caitie (Jackie Rosenbaum) and her overly ambitious little sister Brooke (Lauren Collins). Like the various incarnations of Anne of Green Gables, the Canadian TV series Emily of New Moon was based on the works of novelist Lucy Maud Montgomery. Set in the 1890s, the series starred Martha MacIsaac as Emily Byrd Starr, who after the deaths of her parents was sent to live with her middle-aged aunts Elizabeth (Susan Clark) and Laura (Sheila McCarthy) in the Prince Edward Island community of New Moon. An aspiring writer, Emily possessed an extremely vivid imagination, which frequently resulted in a heap of trouble for herself and her oddball adult cousin Jimmy (Stephen McHattie). Forty-six hour-long episodes were shown over the CBC during a two-year period beginning January 4, 1998. At the outset of the 21st century, Emily of New Moon was picked up for TV exposure in the United States by the Movieplex cable service. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Based upon Katherine Paterson's acclaimed novel, Lyddie changes the location of the story, but is otherwise fairly faithful to its source. Set in 1843, the film tells the story of Lyddie, an impoverished farm girl whose father has been gone for three long years, and whose mother has left her to fend for herself. Feeling that she is little more than a slave to the neighbors who have taken over the family farm, Lyddie decides to improve her lot by taking a job as a factory worker in a nearby town. Though the living conditions in the company boarding house are far from ideal and the working conditions in the mill are dangerous, Lyddie at least has a sense of freedom. She makes friends with a co-worker, Diana, who resents the working conditions and has an influence on Lyddie's way of thinking. The young girl also discovers the joys and importance of reading, and by the end of the film is ready to take an another adventurous step forward in her personal life. ~ Craig Butler, All Movie Guide
