An Israeli documentary about the effect of maternal abuse and the bond of sisterhood, Fortuna takes its title from the name of the imposing and uncaring mother of the six Dvash sisters, who have survived a good deal of childhood trauma at the hands of their mother. A much beloved comedy, Mimino tells the story of a Soviet Georgian helicopter pilot who is called Mimino (Vakhtang Kikabidze), which means "falcon" in that language. He is ambitious to become an international airline pilot and goes to Moscow and, with the help of an old friend, tries to get a job as an international pilot. In his Moscow hotel, he meets Suren, an Armenian, and despite the supposed historical antipathy of Georgians and Armenians, they become friends. They have both pretended to be participants in a seminar on endocrinology in order to get rooms at the hotel where the seminar is being held. He has a lot of wild adventures with Suren, and on his own. Much of the comedy pits ordinary people such as Mimino, who is from the countryside, against the haughty sophisticates of Moscow. Popular Georgian singer Vakhtang Kikabidze, who performs the title role, sang a song within the film which became a Soviet hit. This film won the Grand Prize from the 1978 Moscow International Film Festival, the State Prize of the USSR, and also a prize from the All-Union Film Festival. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

This Soviet Russian film is loosely based on Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn. Georgian director Georgi Daniela aptly brings the sometimes obscure, even surreal, Georgian sense of humor to the screen using two of his favorite actors, Vakhtang Kikabidze (as the "Duke") and Yevgeni Leonov (as the "King"). In the movie, Huck is more or less happily learning how to properly use a knife and fork when his drunken, abusive father hauls him away. Fortunately, he is able to run away from his father, and he joins up with the escaped slave Jim. The two of them journey down the big river and have many adventures in the company of the Duke and the King, two eccentric and unlucky con-men. One highlight is the scene in which the two con-men, whose scheme has gone awry, are tarred and feathered by angry townsfolk. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

This light comedy is taken from the Claude Tiller novel "My Uncle Benjamin", a family favorite of director Georgi Daneliya. Benjamin (Vakhtang Kikabidze) is the young physician who leads a carefree life. He and his friends drink and dance at the local tavern and take pleasure in the butcher's wife. Levan (S. Zakariadze) is the older doctor who wants Benjamin to marry his daughter, but she runs away with an Army officer. The worried father asks Benjamin to find his daughter and bring her home. He finds her but she dies while giving birth to a child, and the officer is killed in a dual. Benjamin returns with the baby to his hometown, where he is saddened to learn of Levan's demise. At the funeral, Levan watches his family and friends for the last time before he really dies. His last wish is fulfilled as he sees the people who are close to him one last time. This is the only film by Daneliya that is set entirely in his native country of Georgia. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide
