Alas, the tables are turned, and Sydney falls into the villain's clutches -- while her CIA contact, Vaughn (Michael Vartan), hesitates to take the necessary steps to save her life. The eighth in a series of movies made-for-TV which recreate stories from the bible, this drama stars Patrick Dempsey as Jeremiah, a prophet who heard the call to preach against the moral and ethical corruption he saw occurring all around him in ancient Jerusalem. While Jerusalem in time fell to Babylon, Jeremiah continued to spread the word of God in Egypt. Jeremiah also features Klaus Maria Brandauer as King Nebuchadnezzar, Oliver Reed as General Safan, and Leonor Varela as Judith. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This off-beat urban anthology offers four different views of the mayhem and destruction that came from the 1992 Los Angeles riots. The first vignette "Gold Mountain," directed by Galen Yuen, centers on a struggle between a traditional-minded Chinese storekeeper and his increasingly uncontrollable son, who is assimilating rapidly into American ghetto life. Their relationship explodes as their store is looted during the riot. Alex Munoz's "Caught in the Fever," featuring a screenplay by the late Joe Vasquez, follows the corruption of a basically good Latino couple who get caught up in the riot's hysteria and set aside their values participate in the chaos. In "Empty" an Anglo policeman finds himself in the center of the riot alone and surrounded by angry youths who force him to take desperate measures. The final vignette, "Homecoming Day" centers upon a black man who managed to escape South Central and forge a better life for himself and his wife. The day the verdict for the Rodney King trial was announced, he goes back to the old neighborhood to see his mother, not realizing that the place will soon become a maelstrom of hatred and violence. In making this anthology, the four filmmakers created continuity by having characters from each film occasionally appear in the background of the other films. Recovering from a disastrous romance, graduate student Jennifer Cole (Lisa Rinna) is attracted to the brilliant, charismatic and unpredictable aspiring author Adam (Rob Estes), whose manuscript she has been hired to type. Adam's proposed novel concerns a serial killer who has systematically targeted eight women for death--and as the work progresses, Jennifer cannot help but worry that Adam intends to convert fiction into fact! Unable to convince her parents, her professors or even the police that Adam may be a dangerous killer in the making, Jennifer takes matters in her own hands, offering to be Adam's "accomplice" in hopes of preventing a bloodbath. The made-for-TV Twisted Desire could be compared to the 1968 theatrical feature Pretty Poison, the difference being that the earlier film was totally fiction, and the later one based on a true story. In a spectacular example of casting against type, Melissa Joan Hart plays 14-year-old Jennifer Stanton, who despises her dominineering parents (Daniel Baldwin, Isabella Hoffman) so intensely that she fantasizes about removing both of them from the face of the earth. Meanwhile, troubled 17-year-old Nick Ryan (Jeremy Jordan), recently sprung from juvenile detention, is trying to get his act together by working as a gas station attendant. Upon sizing up Nick, Jennifer seduces him, then persuades him to murder her mother and father. The ultimate punishment levied for the crime is bitterly ironic, all the more so because it really happened. Twisted Desire originally aired May 13, 1996, on NBC. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Unique among the many made-for-TV dramas about spousal abuse--most of which are about women victimized by men--Men Don't Tell dramatizes the true story of a loving husband who is terrorized by the violent behavior of his wife. Ed MacAffrey (Peter Strauss) has long endured the physical and emotional abuse heaped upon him by his neurotic wife Laura (Judith Light), not only because he loves her and is concerned over the welfare of his daughter, but also because men are traditionally regarded as weaklings if they allow themselves to be battered by their wives. Even worse, after one of Laura's destructive tantrums brings the attention of the police, Ed is suspected of being the aggressor! Finally, Laura goes too far and Ed tries to defend himself--whereupon Laura crashes through the front window of her home and is rendered comatose, and Ed is arrested for attempted murder. Although the ending of the story could be considered positive and upbeat, it is painfully clear that there are many issues that will never be resolved. First telecast by CBS on May 14, 1993, Men Don't Tell was never rebroadcast on over-the-air television, reportedly because it incurred the wrath of several women's groups. "Based on the Georgia case that shocked the country" (or so said its ad copy), the made-for-TV Stay the Night was originally telecast in two parts in April of 1992. Part One introduces Barbara Hershey as a predatory middle-aged woman who seduces feckless teenager Morgan Wessler. Before this two-hour installment has run its course, Barbara has talked Morgan into murdering her husband and taking sole blame for the deed. In part two, first seen April 27, 1992, Morgan's mother Jane Alexander turns the tables on Barbara, using several of the villainess' own dirty tricks. While Stay the Night is rough sledding during the first half, its denouement is well worth the wait. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
