Bob Weinstein Movies

Like his older sibling Harvey, Miramax co-founder Bob Weinstein has an extended list of producer credits that reads like a greatest hits list of cinema from the 1990s and beyond. Unlike his more public-minded sibling, however, brother Bob has quietly minded the books of the enduring studio as the manager of Miramax's expenditures and revenue -- successfully building the company into one of the industry's largest and most powerful independent distributors. Serving as the perfect yin to his brother's yang, the harmonious balance of the Weinstein dynamic has helped to weather everything from the occasional controversy surrounding their films to frequent accusations of intimidation and questionable business tactics.

Born a year after his older brother, the Queens native's stealthy business tact served the duo well when they founded Miramax after purchasing the film The Secret Policeman's Ball at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival. In the years that followed, the Weinsteins' fearless approach to acquiring controversial titles, combined with an acute understanding of the mechanics of the entertainment industry, found both their influence and selection of titles expanding at an unprecedented rate. In 1993, the company was purchased by Disney for 80 million dollars, with the understanding that both Bob and Harvey would remain in control of Miramax. If more adult-oriented films such as Pulp Fiction (1994) and Scream (1996) found distributor Miramax and parent company Disney somewhat at odds from time to time, a steady inflow of profits (along with the releases of such benign romantic dramas and comedies as Muriel's Wedding [1994], Jane Eyre [1996] and Shakespeare in Love [1998]) found both parties flourishing and differences put aside.

Things may have been a bit slow going in the mid-'90s, but a revitalization of their marketing strategies as the decade moved on found such films as Il Postino (1994) and The English Patient (1996) performing successfully at both the box office and the Oscars. In 1992, Bob also played a key role in forming Dimension Films, a Miramax offshoot that focused on producing such moderately budgeted action and horror efforts as From Dusk Till Dawn and Scream (both 1996). Four years later, the duo would sign seven-year deals with their parent company that ensured they would remain active in Miramax's creative output. With such undeniable box-office hits as Chicago (2002), Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003, directed by longtime Miramax devotee Quentin Tarantino), and Bad Santa (also 2003) to add to the brothers' list of success stories, it appeared as if the company would be churning out the hits for some time to come. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Maverick filmmaker Robert Rodriguez details the violent struggle between a ravenous army of zombie-like humanoids who have taken control of the planet and the remaining survivors who refuse to go down without a fight. A dangerous government experiment has unleashed an abominable contamination that turns normal people into murderous mutants. In Death Proof -- director Tarantino's take on such peddle-to-the-metal shockers as White Line Fever -- Kurt Russell stars as an engine-revving psychopath who prefers to take out his beautiful victims at 200 mph. Originally released into theaters on a double bill with Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror under the Grindhouse banner, Death Proof finds a group of ladies out on the town pitted against a mysterious figured named Stuntman Mike (Russell), whose vintage automobile has been partially modified to withstand even the most extreme auto collision. Though the maniacal driver himself always comes out relatively unscathed, the same certainly can't be said for the poor young lass in his passenger seat -- or anyone unfortunate enough to be on the road when the urge to kill strikes for that matter. With a list of potential road-kill candidates that includes Rose McGowan, Jordan Ladd, Rosario Dawson, and Vanessa Ferlito, Death Proof takes viewers on an adrenaline-infused drive that's as sexy as it is shocking. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Opinionated documentary filmmaker Michael Moore takes an up-close look at the political leanings of college students in George W. Bush-era America with this effort shot during Moore's 60-city college campus tour in the months leading up to the 2004 election. The first feature-length film by a major director to make it's official premiere for free on the internet, Slacker Uprising finds Moore giving up any hope for making a profit on the film (which was budgeted at $2 million) in favor of getting his message out to the largest possible audience. That message? "Get off of the couch and give voting a chance." By taking the "Slacker Uprising Tour" to college campuses across the country and offering attendees a free change of underwear, a box of Ramen noodles, and a vow never to begin an event before noon nor allow any politician to speak at one of their events, Moore and his traveling band of speakers, comedians, and musicians managed to fill basketball arenas and football stadiums across the country with apathetic students who hungered for a serious sea change in the American political landscape. Debuting December 1, 2004 on cable's Bravo network, the 60-minute "reality" series Project Runway had much in common with UPN's America's Next Top Model--except that, instead of focusing on the people who wore the fancy clothes, this series zeroed in on the people who put the clothes together in the first place. Hosted by supermodel Heidi Klum, who also executive produced, the show brought together twelve talented but untested fashion designers, who went through a weekly ritual of tasks challenges to determine which of the dozen would win $100,000, a whole slew of prizes, a slot at the annual Olympus Fashion Week in New York, his or her own line of clothes, and the tutelage of the trendy clothing chain Banana Republic. In each episode, one of the contestants was eliminated, with Heidi solemnly intoning "You're in or you're out"; and in most of the intallments, viewers were treated to the fascinating spectacle of watching a design come to life, from drawing board to first chunk of fabric to the splendiferous finished product. The challenges were stage and arranged at Parsons' The New School for Design, while the judges were A-list designer Michael Kors and Elle magazine editor Nina Garcia. Unlike many another reality show of its era, Project Runway exuded class and taste in every frame, and was fully deserving of the Emmy nomination it received during its first season on the air. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Add My Name Is Modesty to QueueAdd My Name Is Modesty to top of Queue
Peter O'Donnell's novels and comic strip was previously brought to film by actress Monica Vitti and director Joseph Losey in an eponymous 1966 spy spoof. Quentin Tarantino had been interested in bringing the character to the screen for a series of films, but the idea languished. Reportedly, Miramax rushed My Name Is Modesty into production because their option on the material was on the verge of expiring. While there were rumors that Luc Besson was going to direct, with Natasha Henstridge starring, that version never came to fruition. The film was released straight-to-video with Tarantino's imprimatur. Relative newcomer Alexandra Staden plays Modesty, and the film serves as a prequel, an introduction to the character of O'Donnell's work. It opens in the Balkans where some soldiers happen upon a resourceful little girl, a wild child. The film then flashes forward to Modesty as a young adult running a casino for the shady businessman, Louche (Valentin Teodosiu). When ruthless bandits attack the casino and the staff is taken hostage, Modesty secretly signals her partner, Garcia (Raymond Cruz), that there's trouble, then buys time by engaging the bandit leader, Myklos (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau of the original Nightwatch), in a battle of wits. She uses the roulette wheel to barter the lives of the hostages for bits and pieces of her life story. And so the film flashes back to her orphaned past, showing how she was taken in by Lob (Fred Pearson), a wily older gentleman, who taught her to read and write several languages and how to thrive in a dangerous world. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

This third feature film version of Joseph Conrad's tragic romantic drama (the best of which remains John Cromwell's 1940 adaptation) is the one that stick's closest to the original story of a reclusive, hard-hearted fellow living on a private island in the Dutch East Indies who must protect his home, and the woman he comes to love, from two brutish villains. The story is told by a sea captain and begins at a turn-of-the century hotel in the port town of Surabaya where the Dutch entrepreneurs come to drink and wind down while listening to an all-female orchestra led by creepy conductor Sam Giancomo (Simon Callow). The joint is owned by an unpleasant, bigoted German named Schomberg (Jean Yanne) who constantly pesters the conductor to sell him Alma (Irene Jacob), the prettiest girl in the band. Eventually Sam relents, causing the frightened Alma to beseech taciturn patron Axel Heyst (Willem Dafoe) to help her escape. At first Axel refuses, but then has a change of heart and takes her with him to his lonely island where she will live with himself and his valet Wang (Ho Yi). Initially, Axel wants nothing to do with Alma, but things change and they become lovers. Meanwhile, the vengeful Schomberg plots revenge. He gets a chance to enact it with the arrival of the villainous Mr. Jones (Sam Neill) and his henchmen who turn Schomberg's bar into a gambling house. Seeing that Jones is ruthless and avaricious, Schomberg casually mentions that there is an untapped fortune lying in an abandoned mine located on Axel's island. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Twenty years after his influential debut, Roger & Me, Michael Moore returns to his roots by pulling back the curtain on capitalism to reveal the insidious role it has played in the destruction of the American dream for many people. Back in 1989, auto workers in Flint, MI, were lamenting layoffs and wondering how they would support their families without jobs to pay the bills, or benefits to ensure their health. Flash forward two decades, when cities all across the country are feeling the same pressures that Flint residents were back when GM left them high and dry. With an average of 14,000 U.S. jobs lost every day and taxpayer money constantly being pumped into failing financial institutions, the question must be asked: how long can this go on before the entire system collapses? Is there really any hope for Americans who are losing their homes to foreclosure and seeing their savings get wiped out at an unprecedented rate? In order to seek out an answer to this question and many more, Moore takes a trip to our nation's capitol, engaging average Americans in conversations about the prospect of repairing America's failing, debt-ridden economy along the way. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

As far as Lt. Aldo Raine (aka Aldo the Apache," Brad Pitt) -- is concerned, the only good Nazi is a dead Nazi.
