The changes in a nation over a ten-year period are implied in this undistinguished and confusing story of three university students, two women and one man, whose variations at love also change through the same decade. The title of the film suggests a consideration of what constitutes "male" or "female" and the possibility that one person could have a little of both. This is a theme that runs throughout the ten-year relationship, as many of the sexual activities of the three lie outside the accepted Venezuelan norms of the day. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Mariano is a foreman in a Venezuelan factory. Despite ongoing efforts by his peers to assist in his development of some sense that the owners aren't always right, he has been content with the status quo for almost 20 years. However, when management puts an under-trained worker on the factory floor, despite Mariano's protests, and the boy is seriously maimed, Mariano goes ballistic. Instead of firing Mariano, or changing their behavior, his employers send Mariano to a psychiatrist, who seeks a subtler compliance from the man and attains it. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Slow in parts but still engaging and well-acted, this drama by Vicente Aranda explores the changing nature of a former fascist, Luis Forest (Lautaro Murua), and his relationship to his niece Mariana (Victoria Abril). Luis has retired to the seacoast to devote himself to writing his memoirs and ruminating over his failed marriage. His sister is worried about him and so she sends her daughter Mariana to check up on how he is doing. The wildly carefree Mariana and her silent photographer friend shake up Luis' staid world. Slowly, Mariana's taunting and teasing break down Luis' intellectual barriers and as that happens she becomes more interested in him. As flashbacks indicate, Luis was not the militant fascist everyone imagined. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
