A middle-aged woman comes into her own in this Spanish comedy. Carmen liked to have affairs. After one typically hot night playing poker and messing around with her male friends, she returns home in the morning to face her husband's jealous rage which causes him to die of a massive coronary. This leaves the newly widowed Carmen in a transitional state. On one hand, she misses her husband and her former life, on the other, she is now seen as available by her boss and co-workers at the newspaper she works at. When her daughter, Marta, a ballet student in Paris, announces her pregnancy, Carmens' life becomes even more complex. After coping with sexual harassment and several lousy dates, Carmen finds her dreamboat, a dashing businessman who appreciates her for herself. He is an astonishingly bad accordian player, and an acceptable ventriloquist, which enables him to scratch a living from the streets as an itinerant musician/entertainer. A long time ago, he met an aristocratic young woman (Ornella Muti) at a sit-in at an art gallery and married her. She has long since divorced him, but he still yearns for her. Juan was injured in a random terrorist incident, and now affects costumes that evoke the Phantom of the Opera and other famous mutilated men. The men incur the feminine wrath of their partners when they spend their time drinking, bowling, and flirting with floozies. The women retaliate by going out on the town to make the men jealous. Rosa (Susana Dosamantes) and her brother cross the border into the United States when a horserace results in murder, and her husband is jailed. Her only hope to bail out her husband and save the family farm is to quickly raise the money, but a band of desperados hastens her departure to the land of opportunity. This is a low-budget, low-brow comedy about people who have the misfortune of working in a hospital, though not as much misfortune as the patients. The doctors are universally incompetent, none of the nurses have been able to find a uniform that was not a tad too small, gangsters wander in and out of the premises, and misfits make up the corps of ambulance drivers, and sometimes, patients as well. The storyline is put together as a series of skits that revolve around a threat of foreclosure to the premises. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Acclaimed horror director Lucio Fulci infuses the sword-and-sorcery genre with gory decapitations, pus-squirting lesions and flesh-eating zombies in this uneven fantasy. The hero of the piece is young Ilias (Andrea Occhipinti), who, along with his bolo-swinging friend Maxz (Jorge Rivero), battles monsters, mutant tribes, and an evil queen (Sabrina Siani) on his journey to manhood. As the evil Ocron, the topless Siani wears a gold mask and bikini bottoms while writhing around on a fur rug covered with live snakes. Siani rules over a risible tribe of people in dog masks who blow narcotics up each others' noses through a straw, and conjures up wolf-warriors from her dreams to shoot poisonous straws at her enemies. The American version is missing much of the gore, but is still far too explicit for the young audiences at whom it is apparently aimed. Terrible special effects, hazy cinematography and inappropriately modernistic music by Claudio Simonetti do not make the film very enjoyable for adults either. Still, it is well-paced and Occhipinti makes a sympathetic lead, making the film worthwhile, if only for genre completists and Fulci devotees. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi
