A wedding that will bring two powerful families together is threatened by the jealousy and greed of a murderous third party in this tense, Spanish-language thriller. Bernardo (Valentin Trujillo) and Priscilla are about to exchange wedding vows - and when they do, the combined fortune of their properties will be extraordinary. But Bernardo isn't the only man who longs to take Priscilla's hand in marriage, because the nefarious Aurelio is out to win her heart as well. In Central America, the peasants are nearly all "Indios," or people whose cultural values are those of indigenous people (rather than European or Spanish). Since the landowning and propertied classes abuse them horribly, these same ruling-class types live in perpetual fear of a bloody uprising. As a result, they suppress and abuse the peasants even more. Ironically, for the most part these peaceable people only want to be left alone. Those who do want to foment revolution have virtually no weapons and few allies to help them. In this action/adventure movie, based on a true incident, a group of Guatemalan peasants who have sought refuge in Mexico are sought out by Guatemalan death squads, and those who aren't tortured and killed are taken away in captivity. The hero in the story is a Mexican hunter whose family is mistakenly included in the raid and who teams up with a few of the survivors to win his family back and take revenge. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

This drama revolves around a star-crossed romance between two very unlikely people. Gabriela (Maribel Guardia, a former Miss Costa Rica) is a considerably beautiful young woman from a wealthy family who was educated in the United States and therefore speaks the language of high finance and everything that has "cachet." Ulises (Valentin Trujillo), whose mother washes clothes for a living, never completed his high school education. When Gabriela and Ulises meet and fall in love, her family is understandably less than enthusiastic about Ulises, so he is determined to change their opinion of him. He vows to become a successful boxer (known as "El Bronco") and therefore qualify as an appropriate husband for Gabriela. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In addition to confrontations with local bullies which require him to make use of his fists, Pedro faces temptation in two forms: the conscienceless lust of the ranch boss' new wife, and his tender love for the boss' daughter, a love which the two have shared (chastely) since childhood. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

The suprisingly short Spanish historical epic Virgen de Guadalupe is based on a venerable legend. The film is set during the era of the Conquistadors. A battle rages between the Aztec tribes of Mexico and the Spanish invaders. At the height of the carnage, a vision of the Virgin Mary brings the bloodshed to a halt. Virgen de Guadalupe was a surprisingly spiritual offering from Mexican director Alfredo Salazar, whose previous ouevre included such gems as Curse of the Aztec Mummy and Wrestling Women vs. the Aztec Ape. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
