Luis Trenker Movies
Born to German parents in Ortisei, Italy, Luis Trenker got his start in German films in 1921 working as a guide for director Arnold Fanck's film crew. A good-looking fellow in top physical condition, Trenker was eventually cast in Fanck's films. Later he played leads in more of Fanck's "mountain films," often playing opposite Leni Riefenstahl. In the early '30s, Trenker began writing scripts for and directing his own mountain films. He later branched out into other genres as well. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

In the 1930s, Leni Riefenstahl was arguably the most important and accomplished female filmmaker of her generation; however, since her primary sponsor was Adolf Hitler, and her best-known work was a hagiographic documentary on the 1934 Nazi Party congress entitled Triumph of the Will, a long and unending debate has raged whether Riefenstahl was a fascist propagandist or a talented artist whose crime was merely doing a job too well. Macht der Bilder: Leni Riefenstahl is an exhaustive two-part look at Riefenstahl's life and work, exploring her early careers as a dancer and actress, reconstructing the making of Triumph of the Will and Olympia (an elaborate and visually striking record of the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games), and her later success as a still photographer, cultural anthropologist, and underwater filmmaker. While the film was made with Riefenstahl's participation, director Ray Muller does not shrink from exploring both sides of the issues of her work with the Nazi regime (she claims to have never been a member of the party and to have been unaware of the genocide of Jews and other "undesirables," while Muller presents evidence that strongly suggests the contrary) even as it celebrates her accomplishments and fierce determination (as a girl she could climb mountains in her bare feet, and in her nineties she was still an avid scuba diver). Macht der Bilder: Leni Riefenstahl was released in the United States under the title The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

The British adventure film The Challenge is based on a real-life turn-of-the-century competition. The race is on between a team of British mountain climbers and a government-sponsored Italian team to conquer a hazardous alpine peak. Edward Whimper (Robert Douglas) heads the English expedition, while Jean-Antoine Carrel (Luis Trenker) is in charge of the Italians. Actual footage of the Alps is seamlessly blended with studio mockups. Emeric Pressburger, on the verge of his felicitous teaming with Michael Powell, wrote the original story for The Challenge. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Luis Trenker performed double duty as star and director of the Italian swashbuckler Condottieri (The Knights). Trenker stars as Giovanni, the son of the infamous Catherine di Medici (Ethel Maggi). Nowhere near as unscrupulous or despotic as the rest of the di Medici family, Giovanni strives to make amends for past wrongs in Renaissance-era Florence. It is suggested that the hero is a 15th-century fascist -- and this being a 1937 Italian film, this means that he's one of the "good guys." Condottieri was simultaneously filmed in Italian and German versions, which may explain its peculiar political shadings. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Der Berg Ruft (The Mountain Calls) was directed by one of the foremost specialists in the German "mountain film" genre, Luis Trenker. The film recreates in meticulous and loving detail the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 by Englishman Edward Whymper. Herbert Dirmoser is cast as Whymper, while Trenker himself essays the part of nominal romantic lead Carrel. To add box-office allure to what was already a highly-charged narrative, Trenker and his fellow scenarists cook up a fictional love affair between Carrel and mountain lass Felicitas (Heidemarie Hatheyer, one of the director's many "discoveries"). The English-language version of Der Berg Ruft, The Challenge, was codirected by Luis Trenker and Vincent Korda. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"Mountain-film" specialist Luis Trenker plies his trade with his usual expertise in the Austrian Velorene Sohn (Prodigal Son). Trenker himself plays the leading role of Tonia Feuersinger, a Tyrolean mountaineer bound and determined to scale the American Rockies. He also wants to journey to the States to court pretty American tourist Lillian Williams (played by pretty American actress Marian Marsh). Leaving his broken-hearted local girlfriend (Maria Andergast) behind, Tonio treks to New York, but never quite makes it to the Rockies; instead, he gets a welding job on a skyscraper, then achieves success as a prizefighter. In the end, however, he realizes that his heart is still in the Tyrol and thus returns to the arms of his hometown sweetheart. Though aimed at the German-speaking clientele, Verlorene Sohn was financed in Hollywood by Universal Pictures. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Two of Germany's best and busiest directors collaborated on Berge in Flammen (Mountain in Flames). The storyline should be of interest to pro-ecologists, inasmuch as the directors take to task the warmongers of the world for despoiling the natural beauties of the European mountain ranges with their shell-fire. The final outrage occurs during a battle between the Austrians and the Italians in the Dolomites, culminating with the destruction of an entire mountain (hence the film's title). The harrowing images on screen were complemented perfectly by the musical score of Giuseppe Beece. Also known as The Doomed Batallion, Berge in Flammen was filmed in three different languages -- German, English, French -- for a total cost of $150,000. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The "great yearning" of the title refers to the desire of heroine Camilla Horn to become a famous movie star. Fortunately, director Theodor Loos happens to be combing the countryside, searching for "something new" to put before the cameras. He discovers Horn, and the rest can be filled in by the audience blindfolded. The charm of this picture lies not in its corny plotline, but in its handling by young director Stefan Szekely, who refuses to sugar-coat his depiction of movie-studio life but instead offers something very close to the truth. Die Grosse Sehnsucht features cameo appearances by such German film faves as Lil Dagover, Liane Haid, Anny Ondra, Fritz Kortner, Franz Lederer, Luis Trenker, Conrad Veidt, and many, many more. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Writer/director Arnold Fanck reteamed Leni Riefenstahl and Luis Trenker, the stars of his previous hit Der Heilige Berg, for this light-hearted "mountain film," which has the sub-title "an improbable but happy story." The goatherd Gita (Riefenstahl) is a skilled mountaineer who lives in a small village in the Alps, where she is pursued by her less athletic suitor Toni (Trenker). Michael Treuherz (Hans Schneeberger, also one of the film's cinematographers), a wealthy hypochondriac, comes to the mountains on a restorative vacation, and is rescued by Gita when he topples into a stream. She and Toni teach him how to ski, and Gita offers herself as the prize in a ski race. Treuherz wins and he and Gita marry and raise a family in the Alps. 27/112 ~ Nicole Gagne, All Movie Guide

Originally titled Der Heilige Berg, Peaks of Destiny is another of the legendary and very well-received "mountain films" of German director/geologist Dr. Arnold Fanck. It also represented the screen debut of Fanck's most celebrated protegee, future director Leni Riefenstahl. The actress is cast as a vampish dancer who comes between best friends and fellow mountaineers Luis Trenker (who likewise became a director of note) and Ernest Peterson. Much of the action takes place on skis, with the outstanding exception of the finale when all three protagonists are stranded on a perilous mountain peak after one of the men tries to kill the other. Though it made hardly a ripple in the U.S., Peaks of Destiny was a huge moneymaker in Europe. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
