A virtuous man discovers just how deep corruption can run, and how easy one can succumb to it, in this satiric comedy-drama from Hungarian filmmaker Istvan Szabo. When a scandal brings down the attorney general of a small but prosperous community near Budapest, Istvan Kopjass (Sandor Csanyi), a man with a clear record and impeccable ethics, is invited to take over the position. While his wife Lina (Ildiko Toth) is wary of the appointment and wants to avoid uprooting their children, Istvan is convinced he can make positive change and he accepts. However, only a few days after taking his new position, Istvan becomes aware of how challenging his job can be when the town's mayor (Oleg Tabakov) persuades him to abandon plans for a new tax schedule that would lower assessments for the poor. Istvan also discovers nearly everyone he meets claims to be some sort of distant relative, and as a consequence wants some sort of special consideration that he often finds difficult to refuse. Istvan's downfall begins when a less than honest banker (Karoly Eperjes) arranges for him to get a special deal on a large house in exchange for some favors, and things get much worse when the banker's attractive wife (Erika Marozsan) uses her charms to lure Istvan into some serious white collar crime. Rokonok (aka Relatives) was adapted from the novel of the same name by Zsigmond Moricz. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Miklós Jancsó's Kelj Fel, Komán, Ne Aludjál (Wake Up, Mate, Don't You Sleep) takes a satiric look at how Hungary dealt with the Jews in the time of World War II. The film begins with Kapa (Zoltan Mucsi) and Pepe (Peter Scherer) being swept up by authorities into a group of Jews. The fourth wall breaks down, and the characters begin complaining to Jancsó about the making of the film. Eventually the picture turns into a series of satirical blackout scenes that are unrelated apart from their inherent Hungarianism. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

Krisztina Deak directs this melodrama about a fractious marriage set in a Slovak village in Hungary during the early 1920s. At the film's opening, impetuous young Ondris (Viktor Bodo) marries -- in grand traditional style -- his father's foster daughter Jadviga (Iidiko Toth), who recently returned from her studies in Germany. During the wedding night, Jadviga reveals some of her private emotional wounds that will require love and nurturing to heal -- something that her hothead husband is unlikely to give. As the film progresses, outside forces begin to impinge on their fragile marriage: the local Slovak community begins agitating for secession, while Jadviga's former lover Franci (Roman Luknar) shows up at their house. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

After two unsuccessful attempts to turn the House horror franchise into a collection of unrelated haunted-house stories (even ditching the House moniker prior to distribution of the third film, The Horror Show), the producers opted for a direct sequel (more or less) to the first film in the series. William Katt returns briefly for the role of Roger Cobb, the former beleaguered owner of a nightmarish fixer-upper filled to the brim with obnoxious demons. His part here amounts to little more than a cameo -- early in the film, Roger is killed in a nasty auto accident during a vacation with his new wife Kelly (Kerri Treas) and their 12-year-old daughter Laurel (Melissa Clayton). Kelly and Laurel -- who is now confined to a wheelchair -- try to begin their lives again at the family's summer house. Once there, Kelly is visited by visions of horrific events (including Roger's death) which become more frequent until she is forced to seek the aid of a shaman, who helps her to interpret them. The visions include a replay of the events which led to Roger's death, indicating the crash was no accident -- and revealing the identity of the party responsible. This installment marks a slightly more effective return to the comedy-horror formula that made House a surprise hit. Basically a distaff retread of that film, House IV benefits from its strong female heroine and more emotional involvement for the leads amid the barrage of slimy effects and over-the-top humor. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

Family life with a touch of comedy Hungarian-style is the focus of this humorous look at the issues that pull and tug at the generation gap. Eva (Cecilia Esztergalyos) and Feri (Andor Lukats) have a solid marriage but tend to disagree over their teen daughter's boyfriend. Eva is slightly more conservative in her expectations -- a trait she may get from her mother who lives with them -- while Feri is more open to teenage behavior of all sorts. He has teens in his art classes and associates with them at school, so he tends to be more up on their behavior. As for the grandmother, she not only thinks the boyfriend is out of orbit, she feels her granddaughter could behave better as well. As the family argues about these issues, Feri telephones an ex-girlfriend for advice and consolation -- a big mistake. Eva seeks her own brand of revenge for that ill-advised phone call, making sure her husband knows about her retaliation -- involving a hotel waiter where she works. When Feri's eccentric uncle (the late Lajos Oze) is added into the family pastiche, it is like icing on the cake.
