When a poor waitress shoots her abusive husband, she is forced to battle the courts for custody of her children while waiting for a verdict on her trial for murder of her husband. Based on a true story, it does a credible job in the depiction of the abusive relationship but some of the impact is diminished when the film moralizes that the husband's latent homosexuality was the cause or as culpable as the physical abuse he inflicted upon his wife. ~ Tana Hobart, All Movie Guide

When a family of three returns to America for a family funeral after living in Shanghai for the past three years, a desperate mother races to save the life of her suffering child upon discovering that he has fallen victim to the wrath of a living corpse. Sarah, Jason, and their young son Sammy were living halfway across the world when they were summoned back home to pay their final respects to a beloved family member. Shortly after the funeral, however, an already grim situation takes a heart-wrenchingly bleak turn when Sammy falls mysteriously ill and appears to be on the brink of death. Failed by western medicine and desperate to save her ailing child, Sarah seeks out the assistance of a mysterious pharmacist who informs her that young Sammy is now in the grip of a living corpse. Like George Lucas' American Graffiti, Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused is an affectionate look at the youth culture of a bygone era. While Lucas took aim at the conservative 1950's, Linklater jumps ahead a generation to the bicentennial year of 1976 to celebrate the joys of beer blasts, pot smoking and Frampton Comes Alive. Set on the last day of the academic year, the film follows the random activities of a sprawling group of Texas high schoolers as they celebrate the arrival of summer, their paths variously intersecting at a freshmen hazing, a local pool parlor and finally at a keg party. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Movie Guide

This nutty low-budget thriller initially resembles a kind of suburban Repulsion, with harried, neurotic housewife Alice Lynn Adams returning from a brief stint in a psychiatric hospital after chopping her smug husband's Bill Blass suits into itty bitty pieces. Upon her release, her husband sets her up in their nearly-completed new home, where she is visited by mysterious nocturnal handyman Ed (Wings Hauser, perennial "B"-movie psycho-man) who completes the work botched by the lazy, inept contractors and lashes out against anyone who wrongs her. Just when it's becoming apparent that the carpenter is a figment of her imagination, he is revealed to be the ghost of the house's previous owner, who was sent to the chair for murdering agents of the bank who foreclosed on him. From this point forward, the film shifts into slasher-horror mode, with Ed having at Alice's tormentors with his power tools. This amusing blend of horror themes comes across a bit muddled at times but still delivers the gory goods. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide
