When two rival groups of surfers face off on a Southern California beach prior to a big surfing contest, things get a little tense. In this youthful surfing adventure, a hot young surfer wins a wave-tank contest in his native Arizona and decides to temporarily abandon his studies to hit the fantastic waves of the Hawaiian North shore pipeline. Once there, he is derided by the other surfers because nobody believes that a boy from the desert could possibly know anything about surfing real waves. Fortunately, an aging hippie (and supremo surfer), who designs boards for a living, believes in him and so teaches him the ropes. This colorful surfing documentary catches the waves from California to Hawaii as participants continue their endless search for the perfect wave. The surfers reveal their motivation and obsession with the sport that appears to be the highlight of their lives. Ecological concerns becomes more evident among surfers, but a disturbing trend of intolerance towards non surfers encroaching on their "territory" coincides. Imaginary lines are drawn between surfers and non-surfers. Famed surfing documentary filmmaker Bruce Brown made short films, commercials, and worked in television before hitting it big with The Endless Summer. This video features three of these early works. The Wet Set is a film produced for Hobie-MacGregor Sportswear, which features surfers modeling swimwear (on the waves). America's Newest Sport is a short film about skateboarding.
