Created by Gerald Glaister, the long-running British drama series Trainer was set in the rarefied world of horse racing. Hero Mike Hardy (Mark Greenstreet) wanted more than anything to be Great Britain's Number One horse-race trainer. In his pursuit of that goal, he crossed the paths of many a colorful character, and not a few lovely ladies. The series' theme song was performed by legendary pop singer Cliff Richard, and as such enjoyed extensive radio play. Debuting September 1, 1991 on BBC1, Trainer eventually trotted out 20 50-minute episodes over a two-year period. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The ten-part British drama series A Kind of Loving was set in Yorkshire and London during the 1950s and 1960s. The action got under way in 1957, when Vic Brown (Clive Wood), the headstrong son of a West Riding minister (John Keegan), began what he regarded as a casual affair with Ingrid Rothwell (Joanne Whalley, some time before her matrimonial name-change to Joanne Whalley-Kilmer). Somewhat against his will, Vic was obliged to declare his intentions to Ingrid's family, and ended up marrying the girl. But neither the courtship nor the marriage was what one could call completely blissful, and therein lay the story's dramatic core. Adapted by Stan Barstow from his own 1960 novel, A Kind of Loving was seen over Granada Television from April 4 to June 6, 1982. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

One of the most popular drama series on British television, Tenko was the fact-based saga of a group of English and European women living in Singapore at the outbreak of WWII. After the Japanese invasion, these women were rounded up by their Imperial Army captors and deposited in a variety of concentration camps. Despite the most appalling of conditions and deprivations, most of the valiant female protagonists managed to survive the ordeal, all the stronger for the experience. The huge distaff cast included Ann Bell, Stephanie Beacham, and Renee Asherton, with Burt Kwouk, best known for his portrayal of karate-chopping manservant Kato in the Pink Panther movies, doing an impressive job as grim, implacable camp commandant Major Yamauchi. Created by Lavinia Warner, the 30 episodes of Tenko (ranging in length from 30 to 55 minutes) were originally broadcast by BBC1 from 1981 to 1984. A one-off sequel, Tenko Reunion, aired in 1985; set in the 1950s, this film managed to incorporate a murder-mystery subplot in what was otherwise a straightforward "ten years after" drama. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Actor Trevor Eve took his first big step toward stardom in the British cop series Shoestring. The title referred to private eye Eddie Shoestring (Eve), who'd been hired to solve a baffling mystery on behalf of the BBC's Radio West service. The ensuing publicity prompted the radio network to offer Eddie his own series, Private Ear, in which he tried to solve the problems of his call-in and write-in fans. On each 50-minute episode, Eddie embarked upon a case sent to him by one or another of his devoted listeners. Other regulars included Doran Godwin as Eddie's girlfriend Erica, and Liz Crowther and Michael Medwin as Eddie's fellow Radio West employees Sonia and Don. Filmed on location near Bristol, Shoestring has been compared to another British cop show, Bergerac, in that both programs dealt with crime-solving in the furthest-flung regions of the British isles. Created by Robert Banks Stewart, the 21-episode Shoestring originally aired over BBC1 from September 30, 1979 to December 21, 1980. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Director Jeremy Summers also cowrote the script of the economically produced nailbiter Depth Charge. The whole thing begins off the coast of Scotland, when a fishing trawler accidently unearths an unexploded World War 2 underwater bomb. Things look bleak for the local fisherman until coxswain David Orr volunteers to defuse the weapon. Though hampered by a tiny budget, Depth Charge manages to maintain a respectable level of tension. Still, even at 55 minutes it seems too long. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
