Jill (Andrea Thompson) wonders if her close relationship with Cohen (Michael B. Silver) is a good idea when he tries to strike a bargain with a crooked attorney. And, with Gina out on pregnancy leave, the squad tries to adjust to the new temporary PAA, the ambitious Naomi Reynolds (Gabrielle Fitzpatrick, in her first series appearance). Rap artist Daddy Kool (Shaun Baker) is shot, but refuses to cooperate with the police investigation of the shooting. Abby (Paige Turco) tells Medavoy (Gordon Clapp) that she wants him to be the father of her child -- and that's all. Accused of framing Officer Szymasnki (Christopher Stanley) on a drug charge, Lt. Working undercover for the Feds to nail Joey Salvo, Simone (Jimmy Smits) realizes that he can rely on absolutely no one when he is investigated by the IAB for his alleged criminal activities. Just shy of 30 years on the force, the gravely ill Gotteli (Carmine Caridi) "hijacks" and crashes a bus. Fancy (James McDaniel) tries to work out a deal whereby Gotelli can escape prosecution and take a medical retirement. A rape-murder occupies most of the other detectives. The fifth-season opener of NYPD Blue ties up several story ends left dangling at the climax of season four. With no one willing to back up his alibi for his relationship with murdered gangster Jimmy Salvo, Bobby Simone (Jimmy Smits) is still on suspension pending an Internal Affairs investigation. Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) wants to extend Bobby a helping hand, but he too is under scrutiny from the IAB. Coming to the rescue (in a manner of speaking) is Detective Jill Kirkendall (Andrea Thompson, now promoted from recurring to regular status), who produces a source to back up Bobby's allegations. Elsewhere, the squad searches for a pimp suspected of killing several people. And on the domestic front, Gina Colon (Lourdes Benedicto) is pregnant, but hasn't yet informed the father, Det. James Martinez (Nicholas Turturro). Sharon Lawrence makes a token appearance as Sylvia Costas; the actress, busy with her own starring sitcom Fired Up, would be absent throughout most of season five. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The mother of Diane Russell (Kim Delaney) prepares to face the grand jury to answer questions about the death of Diane's abusive father. Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) and Bobby Simone (Jimmy Smits) unearth additional family intrigue as they look into the murder of a mobster's son. Unable to overcome the death of his son Andy Jr., Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) turns to the church for help. Back on the job, Sipowicz aids in the investigate of a holdup-homicide involving a pair of mismatched siblings; Medavoy (Gordon Clapp) participates in tracking down the murderer of two people, if for no other reason than to escape his marital problems; and John Irvin (Bill Brochtrup) bids yet another farewell to his colleagues. The episode ends with an affirmation of life, a renewal of hope, and the promise of a repaired romance. Martinez (Nicholas Turturro) runs against Gotelli (Carmine Caridi) in the union-delegate election. Simone probes further into the murder committed in the building he inherited, and again contends with the resentment of Henry Coffield (Willie Garson). When Fancy's (James McDaniel) former foster son is brought up on heroin charges, help comes from an unexpected source. Bobby Simone (Jimmy Smits) and Diane Russell (Kim Delaney) rekindle their relationship, while Medavoy (Gordon Clapp) is stopped from romantically pursuing Abby Sullivan (Paige Turco) by a surprising revelation.
