A stellar roster of hip-hop performers star in this streetwise story about a pair of gang-bangers who want to channel their energies into music, but soon discover how hard it can be to leave their old lives behind. DJ (Mack 10) and Lonzo (Fat Joe) are members of rival street gangs in inner-city Los Angeles; both have an interest in rap music, and after DJ's equipment is destroyed in a fire and Lonzo gets shafted by a sleazy record company executive, they decide that they have more in common than they thought, and they join forces to bring their sounds to the people. Needing financing, they approach Gator (CJ Mac), a wealthy drug kingpin, who agrees to bankroll their projects; with Gator's capital, the record label is a success, but things start to go sour when the police discover who is financing the operation, and an escalating gang war drives a wedge between the partners. Meanwhile, DJ is juggling two girlfriends, Brandy (Kidada Jones) and Leyla (Tom'ya Bowden), and is being pressured by his mother to renew his ties with his father, who abandoned the family when DJ was a child. Thicker Than Water also stars Ice Cube as Slink, MC Eiht as Lil' Ant, and Big Pun as Punny, with Krayzie Bone and Flesh-N-Bone from Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and B-Real from Cypress Hill appearing in cameo roles. Snoop Doggy Dogg was originally cast in the role of Lonzo, but he dropped out shortly before shooting began; New York rapper Fat Joe then stepped in, which added a East Coast vs. West Coast flavor that mimicked the gang rivalry between DJ and Lonzo. Mack 10 served as executive producer and helped write the original story. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

What do you do if you're a white guy in a white town who happens to love black music? Flip (Danny Hoch) is a middle-class kid from the Iowa corn belt, but he doesn't think of himself as just another guy from farm country. Flip loves hip-hop, and he longs to be respected as a hard-core rapper. But a white guy from Iowa who drops mad rhymes looks weird. While Flip and his buddies Trevor (Mark Webber) and James (Dash Mihok) may have the clothes, the style, and the lingo down pat, to most folks they look like three white boys trying to be black. When Khalid (Eugene Byrd), an African-American from Chicago, transfers into Flip's school, Flip comes to his rescue when other kids give him a hard time, and, while Khalid is as baffled by Flip's affectations as most people, a friendship grows between them, and Khalid grudgingly agrees to take Flip and his crew to Chicago, where they get a look at hip-hop culture in a way they haven't seen before. Director Marc Levin previously explored elements of hip-hop culture in his first dramatic film, Slam; he also made a number of acclaimed documentaries, including Gang War: Bangin' in Little Rock, about middle-class kids who have absorbed the gang lifestyle through popular culture. Whiteboys features appearances by a number of noted hip-hop artists, including Snoop Dogg, Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh, and Fat Joe. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A man who has made good in an illegal business discovers going straight is a more complicated matter than he imagined in this urban drama. Victor Rosa (John Leguizamo) is a drug dealer who has made a small fortune selling a heroin-based drug cocktail he's concocted called "Empire." Victor doesn't see himself as a dope pusher; instead, he considers himself an entrepreneur and a businessman who is simply making the most of the economic opportunities presented to him in the ghetto. Through his girlfriend Carmen (Delilah Cotto), Victor makes the acquaintance of Jack Wimmer (Peter Sarsgaard), an upscale investment banker who admires Victor's business savvy and street smarts. Victor is interested in getting out of drug dealing and into a legitimate business, and when Jack offers Victor the chance to buy into a new business, Victor eagerly accepts and makes a good profit in the deal. After this, Victor is all the more enthusiastic when Jack gives him the opportunity to invest in a much bigger project; the price, however, is more than Victor can afford, and he has to borrow from another high-stakes drug dealer, La Columbiana (Isabella Rossellini) in order to make the nut. It isn't long before Victor learns La Columbiana is not a good person to be in debt to -- and that Jack may not be all he imagined him to be. Empire marked the directorial debut of dancer and choreographer Franc Reyes; the supporting cast includes Denise Richards, Sonia Braga, Ruben Blades, and rapper Fat Joe. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A film crew sets out on a journey across the country to discover how money is made in the world of hip-hop. Director Maxie Collier takes us inside the process as he selects his Paperchasers crew and travels across the United States, interviewing people making a living off hip-hop, from street rappers selling tapes out of their trunks, to clothing designers, a hairdresser, DJs, record producers, and recording artists. They're all out to make money, and Collier wants to learn how it is done. In Atlanta, the crew catch rap superstar Ludacris and his crew just months before they sign a record deal and blow up. Collier documents his crew's struggles to land interviews with media bigwigs like Rap-A-Lot's J. Prince and Def Jam founder Russell Simmons. Collier also captures the fluctuations in his personal relationships with producer Yvette Plummer, also the mother of his son, and soundman Marquez Edmond (aka "Marquez the Greatest"), as the pressures of making the film wear on the bare-bones crew. Paperchasers, featuring appearances by Fat Joe, Damon Dash, Flava Flav, and James Brown, had its world premiere at the 2003 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

The Zucker in question is David Zucker, and he's brought along his partner in movie-parody crime, Leslie Nielsen. This time around, aim is taken at such horror blockbusters as Signs and The Ring, while films of other genres, including Independence Day, 8 Mile, and The Matrix, are also lampooned. Viewers are offered a behind-the-scenes look at the "Stop Snitching" campaign in this documentary that speaks with prominent members of the hip-hop community about law enforcement efforts to undermine powerful crime syndicates by employing confidential informants. What began as a simple t-shirt slogan has subsequently exploded into a nation-wide movement that many have criticized as nothing more than organized witness intimidation that effectively encourages criminal behavior. Now the biggest names in rap music have come together to debate whether the "Stop Snitching" movement is simply a street-savvy code of honor and dependability, or a desperate attempt for criminals who fear betrayal to justify their unlawful behavior. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
