A noted purveyor of fin-de-siècle shock comedy, Canadian Tom Green aimed to transform his gross-out TV stardom into movie fame (or infamy) with his 2001 directorial debut, Freddy Got Fingered.Raised in Ottawa, Green began to hone his comic skills as a teenager, pulling gags for the amusement of his friends. Along with doing stand-up while in college, Green released a rap album and created a hit radio show at the University of Ottawa. After graduation, Green managed to get the first incarnation of his signature TV series, The Tom Green Show, on local Ottawa television in 1994. A hit, The Tom Green Show landed on Canada's Comedy Network and officially hit the big time when MTV bought it and began airing it in the U.S. in 1999. During its two years on MTV, the show garnered high ratings due to Green's penchant for pushing the limits of taste with such gags as shagging a dead moose and delivering animal parts to his parents' house, and for involving innocent bystanders in his "confrontational comedy." Green even managed to top the episode featuring his trip home with Presidential paramour Monica Lewinsky when he transformed his spring 2000 battle with testicular cancer into the infamous "Cancer Special" for MTV.
During Green's MTV tenure, he moved to films with a small role in the Saturday Night Live-based comedy Superstar (1999). Green's antics as a nerdy college student, particularly placing a live mouse on his tongue, subsequently became one of the main draws of the raunchy teen hit Road Trip (2000). A cameo as Drew Barrymore's sad sack boyfriend Chad in the blockbuster Charlie's Angels (2000) paid off personally when Green and Barrymore became an offscreen item; after much hedging and a faux jilting at the altar on Saturday Night Live in November 2000, the two married quietly in 2001.
After The Tom Green Show ended, Green turned his attention to his first movie vehicle, co-writing, directing, and starring in Freddy Got Fingered. Avowedly intended to be the most disgusting film possible, Freddy featured such set pieces as Green swinging a baby by its umbilical cord, doing unmentionable things with horses, and many creative uses for meat. Although Green's cinematic escapades earned a few comparisons to 1970s performance art, Freddy Got Fingered was mostly blasted for its technical crudity and general witlessness, and died a swift death at the box office. ~ Lucia Bozzola, All Movie Guide

Molly Shannon brings her Saturday Night Live character Mary Katherine Gallagher to the silver screen. A mildly hyperactive Catholic school student convinced that she smells bad, Mary Catherine has a dream: she wants a boy to kiss her. Not just any old sloppy teenage make-out party kind of smooch, but the sort of kiss that will make her tingle with joy from head to toe. The trouble is, boys aren't all that interested in Mary Catherine, especially not Sky (Will Ferrell), the boy she'd most like to be kissed by. So Mary Catherine has a goal: if she wants to be kissed the way boys kiss girls in the movies, then she must become a movie star. Not a bad idea, but how does one bring this about? Television star Tom Green makes his directorial debut with this gross-out comedy. Green stars as Gord Brody, a 28-year-old slacker who aspires to be an animator of Hollywood cartoons. After his dreams of working for studio mogul Dave Davidson (Anthony Michael Hall) temporarily wash out, along with his thankless job at a cheese factory, Gord returns home to live with his parents, Jim (Rip Torn) and Julie (Julie Hagerty). Jim wishes that Gord would simply grow up, move out of the basement, and get a real job like his younger brother Freddy (Eddie Kaye Thomas), who works in a responsible position at a bank. When the battle of wills between Gord and Jim heats up, Gord devises various stunt-like schemes to drive his father bonkers, including the bogus charge that their father molested Freddy as a youngster. Two buddies find themselves doing some very wrong things for perfectly right reasons in this broad comedy. John (Jason Lee) is a nice guy who is responsible and hardworking; his best friend Duff (Tom Green), however, is his polar opposite, a layabout who is constantly getting in some sort of trouble. John is very much in love with his longtime girlfriend Elaine (Leslie Mann), and wants to marry her, but true to form, he has pledged not to make the walk down the aisle until he has saved up to 30,000 dollars so they'll be able to afford a down payment on the house they've always wanted. After years of saving, John has finally put 30 grand in the bank, and has set the date with Elaine. However, as John's big day approaches, he gets word from his sister Patty (Megan Mullally) that her daughter Noreen (Tammy Blanchard) has been accepted into Harvard University -- and years ago, John promised her if she got into the prestigious college, he'd pay the tuition. Making good on John's pledge to his niece would leave him with a mere 121 dollars in the bank, but he doesn't have the heart to say no to Noreen, or tell Elaine of his dilemma. John does tell Duff about his problem, who comes up with a typically hare-brained solution -- turning to a life of crime for the next two weeks in order to steal another 30,000 dollars. Just before entering college, young skateboarder Eric Rivers (Mike Vogel) decides to take a road trip from Chicago to California with his smart friend Dustin (Adam Brody) and his wacky friend Matt (Vince Vieluf). Despite their underdog status, they intend to make it big in the world of skateboarding in the wake of legendary touring skater Jimmy Wilson (Jason London). They end up recruiting a fourth team member named Sweet Lou (Joey Kern) as Eric romances the film's token attractive female Jamie (Jennifer Morrison). Tom Green, the prankish bad boy of cable whose proficiency in the field of outrageous practical jokes and stunts launched a whole slew of even more outrageous imitators (Jackass, for one), returned to television in this nightly, 60-minute MTV series. It was a calmer, friendlier and "straighter" Tom Green whom the viewers saw this time around. Having watched hours of old Steve Allen and Jack Paar tapes in preparation, Green was determined to present a standard late-night talk/interview show in the classic tradition (the man even wore a suit!) There were, however, fond hark backs to the Tom Green of old, whenever the host and his sidekick, Glenn Humplik, involved members of the audience in zany comedy sketches. Nearly anyone who performs in public on a regular basis is familiar with the notion of the audience member who makes their opinions loudly and clearly known during the show, and like most comedians Jamie Kennedy has dealt with his fair share of hecklers over the course of his career. However, when Kennedy moved from stand-up comic to actor, he encountered a new breed of heckler -- the on-line film critic who posts angry rants on the internet, taking Kennedy to task for nearly every aspect of such critically drubbed movies as Son Of The Mask and Malibu's Most Wanted. Kennedy teamed up with director Michael Addis to make the documentary Heckler, which explores the increasingly combative relationship between artists and their audience. Heckler features interviews with a number of comics and musicians discussing their experiences with loud-mouthed spectators (including Bill Maher, David Cross, Louie Anderson, Rob Zombie, Joe Rogan and David Allen Grier), but Kennedy goes a step further, confronting a number of the writers who've bad-mouthed his work and questioning their role in the creative process. Kennedy and Addis also talk with filmmaker Uwe Boll, who went so far as to challenge his critics to a boxing match. Two washed-up snowboarders hatch an ingenious scheme to restore their reputations and get back on top of the snowboarding scene in this chilly comedy starring Tom Green and Dave England. Back in the 1990s, you couldn't pick up an extreme sports magazine without seeing glossy pictures of Max (England) and Eddie shredding it up on the snowy half-pipe. But these days things are different; a decade of reckless behavior has left them terminally hung over and hopelessly off-balance. Max and Eddie now work as lift operators at Stubby Peaks ski hill, and they hate their lives. Realizing that the only way to regain their status as kings of the hill is to take the top prize at the upcoming snowboarding event, the two longtime pals decide to form the ultimate snowboard team. But their old arch-nemesis Kingsley Brown (Green) is now the head of the National Snowboard Association, and he's seen the chaos these two boozy buddies are capable of causing. In order to keep Max and Eddie out of the sport for good, he blackballs their camp with all of his power. The hottest summer on record turns downright chilly when some unexplainable crop circles appear in a local field, and representatives from a mysterious foreign oil company turn up hoping to buy the local grain elevator in this comedy starring Tom Green and Crispin Glover. As night falls over Laxdale, a series of strange events culminate in the discovery of some elaborate crop circles on a local farm. Before the locals have a chance to try and make sense of all the strangeness, Petrocon General Manager Veirgacht (Glover) appears in town and announces plans to purchase the local grain elevator. This plan doesn't sit well with former NHL player Bill Swanson (Green), because should Veirgacht succeed in convincing the locals to let Petrocon start searching for oil, Bill will be out of work. Later, Bill finds his old minor league hockey coach Arnie locked in his house and dying from hypothermia. Arnie claims that the only thing protecting him from some mysterious invaders is the cold, but promptly freezes to death before giving Bill any concrete information about who "they" are or why "they've" come to Laxdale. Now convinced of foul play, Bill enlists the aid of local barmaid Gina Larson in getting to the bottom of this extraterrestrial mystery. When local gear-heads Randy and Dwayne spontaneously combust during a joyride down a country road, the time finally comes to uncover Veirgacht's true intentions. Upon discovering that Petrocon is actually an "off world" time-share company intent on transforming the Earth into a lavish resort for extraterrestrials, Bill and Gina team up to find the aliens' Achilles heel and save the entire human race from being enslaved as cabana boys and chambermaids. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
