Das Goldene Ding (1971)

Das Goldene Ding (1971)
The award-winning director of this film, Edgar Reitz, was a leader in the movement of young German filmmakers to revitalize the German film industry, an industry relying on stale conventions and "safe" movies. Das Goldene Ding is his first venture into full-length storytelling. It retells the legend of the Golden Fleece in a new way. First, the story is told from the perspective of the Argo's ship's carpenter. Secondly, all the Argonauts, Jason, Herakles, Orpheus, etc., are young teenagers, battling against ogre-ish adults. Finally, the ardent young Argonauts solve their apparently supernatural challenges using a little science and common sense. Made for German TV, this film was very well-received when it was released. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
