Rowing with the Wind (1987)

Rowing with the Wind (1987)
Member Rating:
The events that led Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley to write her horror masterpiece Frankenstein provide the basis of this haunting, romantic drama. The story opens aboard a beat up schooner as it carefully makes its way through a massive broken ice pack near the North Pole. There Shelley writes her fantastic tale and reminisces about the events of the previous summer when she was courted by the poetic Percy Byshe Shelley. They elope and go to Switzerland where they become friends with dashing Lord Byron and his companion Dr. Polidori. Shelley's sister Claire accompanies them and gets romantically entangled with Byron. The group subsequently spends some idyllic almost hedonistic weeks at Byron's villa. Over the next few years, strange, tragic and troubling events occur and whenever they do, Shelley sees her monster lurking in the shadows. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

There seems to be a great disconnect between what this film wanted to achieve and what it actualy became after it left the editing room. Hugh Grant steals the show as Byron, completely bewitching and overpowering the rest of the cast. His role might have been larger than life, but one cannot underplay this pop idol of the past. The overall pace is irregular and it throws off the dramatic tension.

The comming attractions were very interesting ... but the movie itself was disappointing ... and a little disjointed

Why do screenwriters take real stories and substitute their own? This movie takes Shelley's madness and places it on his wife, gives her his hallucinations. The visions of the "monster" are completely concocted. Children die in ways they did not die in reality. If the movie story were successful as a result, it might be worth watching, but it does not hang together in the least. The only good part is the music. The music - Vaughn Williams - lends a profundity to the movie that isn't there.
