Director Michael Ritchie's ongoing satirical spin on the American Dream is dressed up in quasi-documentary fashion in Downhill Racer. Robert Redford stars as an Olympic-grade skier, whose talent is matched only by his aloof self-involvement. As the cocksure Redford rises to the top of his class, he discards any emotional attachments that might impede his progress, ranging from girlfriends to his own father. When Redford finally attains his goal in life, the thrill of victory is an empty one indeed. The cold-bloodedness of Redford's character may have worked against Downhill Racer at the box office; on the other hand, Ritchie's similarly structured political satire The Candidate offered a "warmer" Redford -- but it, too, was a box-office disappointment. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Would make a great Blu Ray disk, lots of fine skiing footage as well as background shots of Europe in the 1960s. DVD was only released in Europe. You can only watch it on multi-region players, most are made by LG. Porsche got some good PR also as Redford and Camilla Sparv (Paramount Chief Bob Evans' actual girlfriend) drive the car through the Alps. Note: Gene Hackman plays the Head Coach of the team, in an early leading role.

If you are looking for a skiing movie or just like the cast then you should be okay here. Not a great movie, but other then a skiing seen in an action movie (James Bond?) this is the only movie I know of about the sport. The racing scene's are well done and hard to believe just how fast they were back then, just shows talent is as important as fancy equipment. I think the story is pretty solid and easy to follow, also includes a nice romance between Redford and Sparv. Worth watching for fans of either.
