Member Rating:
This quirky science fiction comedy is a characteristic feature by iconoclastic director Tim Burton, known to moviegoers for Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. The storyline affectionately harkens back to the deadpan sincerity of such '50s and '60s science-fiction films as The Day the Earth Stood Still and War of the Worlds. Flying saucers have been reliably seen over the capitals of the world, and the whole world awaits with bated breath to see what will transpire. Among those waiting is the President of the United States (Jack Nicholson), who is assured by his science advisor (Pierce Brosnan) that the coming aliens are utterly peaceful. This advice is hotly contested by the military (led by Rod Steiger), who advices the President to annihilate them. When the aliens land, they are seen to be green, garish, and very cheerful. But appearances prove deceiving when the "friendly" aliens abruptly disintegrate the entire U.S. Congress. Hollywood notables appear in vast quantities in roles (and sub-plots) of all sizes in this zany feature. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

OK, I thought this movie was pretty funny. It must be watched in the same frame of mind as when you watch a National Lampoon movie or anything with Leslie Nielson. It's SUPPOSED to be stupid! As for those who say it was a playing on Independence Day, they were released in the same year which means they were in production at the same time so how could they have copied anything. Both are reminiscent of Aliens, V or War of the Worlds, ie. bad aliens come down to take over Earth. It's a fun movie to watch when you don't want to have to think too hard. There is some graphic, cartoonish violence so I wouldn't recommend to very young children.

... of the 50's and 60's get their cumuppance at the hands of Tim Burton. Throw everything you expect from the star-studded cast out the window and just let this idiocy entertain you! You already know what's going to happen as each character is introduced! The secret to enjoying this movie is having seen those lame space thrillers of yesteryear, and enjoying the tongue-in-cheek drubbing Burton gives them! Get your popcorn, darken the room and enjoy!

Pretty funny movie (even though I was a bit disappointed with Jack N's role - thought he could have added a bit more to the overall movie). I really thought it was creepy the way that alien lady moved trying to catch up to Martin Short. Probably was a special effect.
