Member Rating:
In the year 2029, the world has become interconnected by a vast electronic network that permeates every aspect of life. That same network also becomes a battlefield for Tokyo's Section Nine security force, which has been charged with apprehending the master hacker known only as the Puppet Master. Spearheading the investigation is Major Motoko Kusanagi, who -- like many in her department -- is a cyborg officer, far more powerful than her human appearance would suggest. And yet as the Puppet Master, who is even capable of hacking human minds, leaves a trail of victims robbed of their memories, Kusanagi ponders the very nature of her existence: is she purely an artificial construct, or is there more? What, exactly, is the "ghost" -- her essence -- in her cybernetic "shell"? When Section Six gets involved in the case, she is forced to confront the fact that there is more here than meets the eye, and that the Puppet Master may hold some of the answers she seeks. But little does she know that he has been seeking her as well. ~ Emru Townsend, Rovi

Ghost in the Shell is a legend in the Anime community and is hyped as one of the greatest ever made. Perhaps you just have to be in the right mood to watch it. This movie has a strange mix of violence and gore, nudity, and deep intellectual and philisophical questions about the morality of AI, androids and cybernetics. I suppose that if I were in the mood for such a philisophical movie that this would be very entertaining (in a 'Slingblade' sort of way). However I was under the impression that it was an action flick. There is plenty of action, but it is so far seperated by talking that the movie never has a chance to build momentum to a climax so when the conflict resolution finally comes, it is rather lack-luster. All of this said, the story line is fantastic. A lot could have been done to not sacrifice the story and liven up the movie. Maybe in another incarnation, it will reveal its true glory.

When it come to anime this movie is a great reference to compare to other animes. The action is great and at the time new in style. But, it does lack with flow in story. The television series is just as fun or maybe even better.
