The debut feature from writer/director Lisa Krueger stars Scarlett Johansson and Aleksa Palladino as the titular Manny and Lo, orphaned teenaged sisters who avoid foster homes by living on the run, stealing food, and sleeping in random model homes. Older sister Lo is the rude, bossy, incompetent leader, and younger sister Manny is her thoughtful, realistic, logical underling. It quickly becomes apparent that Lo is pregnant and they won't be able to continue their wandering lifestyle of "keep moving and you won't get nailed." After a significant stage of denial, Lo goes to a hospital for an abortion and is denied. Quickly running out of options, Lo comes up with plan that seems ridiculous to the observant narrator Manny. Since they don't know anything about birthing babies, they kidnap Elaine (Mary Kay Place), a middle-aged woman dressed as a nurse who works in a maternity store. Together, the three women squat in an abandoned house in the woods so the disgruntled Lo can have her baby. Eventually, the owner of the house comes home and the captive Elaine resorts to a strange solution to the problem. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

Fans of Scarlett Johansson and director Lisa Krueger will likely enjoy this offbeat first starring role for Ms Johansson as a child actress in a feature film. Scarlett as Manny/Amanda plays the younger of two sisters "on the lam" from unhappy and separate foster home situations. They are quite accomplished in surviving by their wits. But once Lo/Laurel becomes pregnant--their creativity to be able to stay together "outside the system is greatly challenged.I don't want to spoil the plot, but what follows is a relationship with an older "nurse" working in her neice's maternity store that leads to adventures for the three which are sad, comical, sometimes tragic, but growth producing for all with a hopeful conclusion. I loved it!!!

Rented this to see Scarlett, big suprize, she is 10 years old in this film and does a great job acting. Very interesting approach to solve teen pregnancy problems, just kidnap someone who is an expert on birthing and babies. Or at least kidnap someone you THINK has that expertise. Funny and sad at the same time. Super performances by the kids in this one. Mary Kay Place also does a great job. I think the rating is misleading, this is a good movie for your early teenager, for them to learn the possible effects of unprotected sex.
