A Single Girl (1995)
Member Rating:
As Valerie, 19-year-old Virginie Ledoyen is not just the titular Single Girl, but for all practical purposes, the entire movie. As the film opens, she meets her sullen, unemployed boyfriend Remi (Benoît Magimel) at a cafe, and reveals that she is pregnant with his child. She is not only unsure about whether she should keep the child, but whether Remi would make a decent father if she did. She is also starting a new job as room service in an expensive hotel and promises to return to the cafe in an hour and tell Remi her decision. The bulk of the film consists of a real-time study of that critical hour. Valerie takes trays from room to room, and the camera follows every stair step, every elevator trip. There are interactions with peculiar guests, but none of them are particularly important characters. The focus is always on Valerie. ~ John Voorhees, Rovi

Virginie Ledoyen brings a new level of chic to the mundane workday. Follow her step by step through two hours of her day and enjoy the simple beauty that comes from the smallest smirk or sparkle in her eyes. The camera is the voyuer as it eavesdrops on the talented young actress.

Wonderful little film, in the spirit of the French New Wave, about a day in the life of a young Parisan girl. Filmed in real time this is a literal "slice of life". Although I must issue a warning to others before they see the film. This film has no plot. It is about a young girl who starts a new job the same day she finds out she's pregnant, and that's it. It's filmed in real time meaning that if she has to walk from the kitchen to the 3rd floor, the camera follows her every step of the way. Your enjoyment of this film will depend on how big a crush you get on Virginie Ledoyen. In my case, quite a big one. This is not a film for everybody but for those who like small dramas that involve people and not explosions, this is a great film.

Don't bother! Thank God, all French girls aren't as gruff and unpleasant as this one! There are so many other fulfilling french flics out there, why would you want to waste your time and hopes on this one, it will let you down and feel abandonned in the end, and you'll wonder; why didn't I clean out my closet instead???
