There have been many attempts over the years to transplant Shakespeare's work to a more modern setting. Most have failed miserably in their atempt, not even getting off the ground. However, director Richard Loncraine brings to life probably the most despised villan in English literature. Ian McKellen is shines as the vile Richard who through intriuge and murder wins for himself the throne of England, only to see everyone abandon him when the true test of friendship comes. I have seen many productions of Richard III and many take on the mantle of wretched Richard. I have never, however, cheered on Richard until now.

This film adaptation is a voyeuristic feast for the eyes into the mind of a madman, Richard III, played by the venerable Ian McKellan of LOTR and X-Men fame. McKellan has a devilishly good time as the scheming, conniving Richard who will stop at nothing to ascend the throne of England and wed Lady Anne, the object of his desire. Set in post-WWI England, the film adaptation of Shakespeare's classic comes into the present with a bang, bringing us all the cloak-and-dagger of a great espionage flick while still holding true to the original. The performances are exquisite. We were glued to our seats. Not since Kenneth Brannaugh remade Henry V has a Shakespearean play been so well adapted to the screen.
