This historical drama, directed by Agnieszka Holland, focuses on the rocky relationship between the renowned 19th century French poets Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine. Rimbaud (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a teenage wunderkind known for his rebelliousness against conventional society and his surrealistic writing. He disrupts the life of Verlaine (David Thewlis), a more conventional writer who is older and married to a dutiful young wife, Mathilde (Romane Bohringer). The drunken Verlaine is unkind to Mathilde, even though her father is providing him with a house and an income to live on while he pursues his writing. Rimbaud overwhelms Verlaine, mocking his conventionality, constantly disrupting his domestic life, and somehow attracting the maniacal love of the older man. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

If you have ever passionately wanted something or someone and dealt with the frustration of knowing you could never have it, then you will connect with this excellent movie. Leonardo DiCaprio makes the art of acting seem so easy and he is so believable in his character. It is well worth watching.

The acting in this movie overcame the fact that it portrayed some rather sick human beings. It wasn't the homosexuality that bothered me, it was the sado-masochistic relationship that seemed to be at the heart of this relationship. No matter how much you love someone or desire them, it does not give you license to keep on being both physically and psychologically abusive to them. I must say that this was some of DiCaprio's best work, and very brave of him to take on the role of such a person. Thewlis was also very good in his part. All in all, I would highly recommed this movie!!

Stunning acting by DiCaprio and Thewlis. The conflict in Thewlis' character's life, namely married to a lovely, wealthy, sexy woman he is deeply in love with, while attracted to the arrogant, brutish, homosexual DiCaprio will keep viewers watching. Although I was not comfortable with the subject matter, the quality of acting of this film gives it high marks.
