Blue in the Face (1995)

Blue in the Face (1995)
Member Rating:
Director Wayne Wang and screenwriter Paul Auster had enough storylines and characters left over from their charming comedy Smoke to make another film, so they shot Blue In The Face immediately after Smoke was completed. The film once again centers on the Brooklyn Cigar Store and manager Auggie (Harvey Keitel), although most of the other characters are different. The store owner's frustrated wife Dot (Roseanne) is one of them, and one of the plotlines follows her attempts to seduce Auggie. Madonna, Michael J. Fox, Lily Tomlin, and Lou Reed (as himself) also put in appearances. Blue In The Face was shot without a complete script and presents a unique combination of distinctive performances, oddball characters, improvisations, and raffish scenes. ~ Don Kaye, Rovi

First, rent Wayne Wang's "Smoke", enjoy it, and then rent 'Blue In The Face". SMOKE is a movie I absolutely LOVED (having a crush on Harvey Keitel didn't hurt) Wong filmed two movies at the same time here, letting the actors in Smoke ad-lib and have fun with a loose story line based on smoking cigarettes. While making Smoke the director did a little side movie where he let the actors do little vinettes or skits so to speak revolving around the Cigar Shop & brought other actors in on the set too who weren't even in the movie. Michael J Fox's skit in Blue in the Face is my favorite, it's hilarious - Lily Tomlin's was brilliant - I could have done without RoseAnne but there were many of these little vinettes with many different actors all wanting to do a scene with Harv in the smoke shop. This is just a garnish to the movie Smoke - but it's an enjoyable one.

Had nothing to do with "Smoke". Some funny stuff, better if you're from NY. This sequel is a bunch of ad-lib sketches with no plot or story line.
