Julia (Kate Beckinsale) has been busy about her job, doing painstaking restoration work on a fifteenth-century painting. As good restoration work is at least as much about doing good research and detective work as it is about the physical process of restoration, when her cleanup of the Flemish painting reveals a hitherto undiscovered Latin phrase which translates as "Who killed the knight?" she goes to the art authorities she knows to find out what it might mean. Oddly, at the same time a series of murders begin to rock her small world of art experts, patrons and restorers, and she finds that the mystery of the painting is interwoven with the mystery of the deaths around her. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

This European (largely UK) film is an uneven throwback to the mysteries of the sixties/seventies with modern relationships (gay and otherwise) with a young Kate Beckinsale in the lead role. There are allusions to chess and the pomposity of the players; perfect European (filmed on location in Barcelona) settings in an old-world flavor; and the Bohemian Julia, who is both innocent and worldly, exposed to raw perversions and murder by a jealous guardian. Julia uncovers the secret of the painting and the mysterious deaths surrounding her own life. ‘R’ for language, nudity, and sexual situations, implications and discussions, which distract at times and seem gratuitous, but somehow fit the style. Acting and scripting are uneven, but the cinematography is worthy of study. Music was distractingly whimsical in places, but fitting with others, sometimes setting the mood for the situation. Full-screen with opening and closing credits strangely letter-boxed on all four sides.

Very average whodunnit type movie. Reasonably entertaining - saved from obscurity by the stunning (very young) Kate Beckinsale who exposes more of herself than would be allowed in a typical, uptight Hollywood movie.

To really enjoy this story, don't simply watch this movie. Read the book, The Flanders Panel. It is one of my all time favorites and that's why I rented this movie. The movie lacks in overall quality. What makes the book great is the background story, information and setting. All of which lacked in the movie. Still if you enjoy murder mysteries, give this movie a try.
