Dillinger (1945)
Member Rating:
Dillinger, the was the ninth effort from the enterprising King Brothers, and their most financially successful film to date. Lawrence Tierney became an overnight cult favorite with his gritty portrayal of maverick bank robber John Dillinger, though top billing is bestowed upon Edmund Lowe as gang chieftain Specs. The film traces Dillinger's criminal career from his first petty theft to his spectacular 1934 demise outside Chicago's Biograph Theater (incidentally, this film was banned in Chicago for several years). Anne Jeffreys plays Dillinger's fictional moll Helen, while Elisha Cook Jr., Marc Lawrence, and Eduardo Ciannelli go through their usual crime-flick paces. The film's set piece is an elaborate armored-car holdup, lifted in its entirety from footage originally shot for Fritz Lang's You Only Live Once (1937). Screenwriter Philip Yordan, fresh from his Broadway triumph Anna Lucasta, earned an Academy Award nomination for Dillinger. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

John Dillinger robbed banks and was shot by the FBI. This is about all this film has in common with the life of the historical Dillinger. Take a pass. This movie is of interest only to students of low budget crime films of the 40's. The CD has a commentary by John Milius, whose own "Dillinger" film (1973) starred Warren Oats, and is the much better movie for those interested in either the main character or in the atmosphere of the period.

There is probably less than ten seconds of historical accuracy in this low budget, yet likable flick. Tough characters abound--but it woulda been better if they just made it a generic fictional gangster story--instead of a false portrait of a real person. In that regard--it fails.

This movie presents the most effective portrayal of a psychopathic criminal that I can recall ever seeing. However, I think it was short on gun fights. If it had incorporated the submachine gun fights of the movie Public Enemies, it would have become well known as a classic..
