Five cops, two bulletproof vests. It sums up the dilemma of this movie in more ways than one. La Scorta (The Escort) revolves around these officers (and family men), who are underfunded and definitely watching the clock, and asks, are they prepared to give their lives to protect a Judge whose own life the local Mafia has vowed to take? And, I ask, how much of a movie can you make on a decidedly threadbare budget? But this film makes the most of what little it has. Using tension and anticipation to keep you guessing, as the Judge is ferried at speed in a two car convoy across a landscape where you expect every parked car to be wired with nitro (Iraq anyone?). You mostly get to peer into the strained lives of cops under a seeming sentence of death. But if you're expecting action and thrills, look elsewhere. This film is all about the build and an eventual payoff that doesn't deliver on the promise.
