Based on the graphic novel by James O'Barr, this fantasy follows Eric Draven (Brandon Lee), a rock musician who is murdered along with his fiancée, Shelly (Sofia Shinas), by a group of marauding thugs who terrorize the decaying city in which they live. One year to the day after his death (which happens to be Devil's Night), a mystical crow appears at Eric's grave; Eric rises from the dead and, with the bird as his guide, goes on a mission to avenge himself against Top Dollar (Michael Wincott), the leader of the gang who killed him. Star Brandon Lee was killed while filming a scene in which he was shot with a shell from an improperly cleaned gun that was supposed to be loaded with blanks.     I want to make this as short and sweet as possible. I am still waiting for another movie like this one. I don't mean in the form of a sequel, they have been terrible by comparison, even when somewhat entertaining. The mood, tempo, setting, surrealism, and characters all fell into place perfectly here. The Crow has not been equated by any movie of its strange genre since, making it one of my top 5 of all time. No movie comes close to immersing the viewer into a fictional world resembling some places we know. Even the director has gone on to make very successful films, but none have reached the artistic vision dominated by "The Crow".

    A transcendent film which offers far more than simple action. With a brooding Gothic atmosphere, a deep and well-realized script, fine performances from a cast of relatively unknown (at the time) actors and a serious post-Grunge soundtrack, "The Crow" made the most of its graphic novel origins. Unlike the early Batman and Superman offerings, "The Crow" was an adult oriented film with serious themes and a level of violence which probed the limits of the rating board's tolerance in the early 1990's. It is a real tragedy that Brandon Lee was killed by the reckless incompetence of others on the set of this film. It seems likely that he would have enjoyed a long and successful career as an action star and Hollywood celebrity. I would also recommend Brandon Lee's other widely available films "Showdown in Little Tokyo" and "Rapid Fire", both of which are more conventional, but still entertaining.

    I just watched this movie for the very first time and I was impressed that it came out in 1994. It was a great film. Brandon Lee reminded me of Heath Ledger as The Joker in "The Dark Knight" the entire time, however both were extremely talented. This movie is classic, especially in blu-ray.
