Dementia 13 (1963)

Dementia 13 (1963)
Member Rating:
A young Francis Coppola was given the job of directing this moody low-budget chiller after begging producer Roger Corman for the opportunity to reuse the sets for another film which Corman was shooting in Ireland. The story centers on the dysfunctional Haloran family, who live in a state of perpetual sorrow in a spooky Irish castle. Still mourning the death of her young daughter Kathleen -- who drowned in the lake seven years ago -- Lady Haloran (Ethne Dunn) tortures herself regularly by visiting the girl's grave (when she's not shrieking and collapsing in anguish every five minutes). When daughter-in-law Louise Haloran (Luana Anders) loses her husband to a heart attack, she manages to conceal the body for fear of being cut out of Lady Haloran's will. To further complicate matters, a mysterious interloper begins prowling the grounds with an axe to grind... a very big axe. This enjoyable, quirky psycho-thriller is enlivened by Coppola's inventive camera setups, atmospheric locations and Patrick Magee's over-the-top performance as the leering family doctor. Despite some ragged editing (probably not Coppola's doing), this has relatively high production values for a spare-change Corman project. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

This is called Dementia 13 because there was already a movie called Dementia. The 13 was just to add a bit of creepiness . The mother fainting on cue each year at the memorial makes you want to reach through the screen and slap some sense into her. The doctor is creepy. This movie would have scared the you-know-what out of me in my younger days. Nothing scares me now but I did think this still had enough chill, thrill and horror factor to frighten some people even after nearly 50 years.

I rented this movie after hearing an interview with Coppola discussing how he really pushed to get this movie done. He only agreed to do The Godfather if the studio would let him make this film. Goes to show that directors are not always the best writers. Glad the studio made the deal or we would not have The Godfather. This movie was a waste of time.

I wonder where the number 13 comes into play for this movie. Kinda creepy at times. B/W film. Francis Ford Coppola wrote and directed the film if I am not mistaken. I wish the daughter in law was in the story line a bit longer. She was making it creepy. Love the fact that before she enters the pond she is wearing her WHITE bra and panties. But I guess once they started filming her in the water they realized white becomes transparent when wet because...........when you see her swimming under the water her panties are now black!!!!! Ooops someone forgot to check the continuity here! But a campy movie to watch on a rainy day. ~ Susan L.
