Houston: The Legend of Texas (1986)
Member Rating:
Sam Elliot stars as Sam Houston, the visionary who nearly single-handedly forged the state of Texas into a powerful entity in its own right. Refusing to forget the Alamo (as if anyone could), Houston led the military in Texas' rebellion against Mexico. G.D. Spradlin co-stars as President Andrew Jackson, with Michael Beck appearing as Jim Bowie, James Stephens as Stephen Austin, and Richard Yniguez as Mexican General Santa Anna. Lensed on location in the Lone Star state, this sweeping made-for-TV film originally occupied three hours' screen time on November 22, 1986. I loved this movie! (What Texas wouldn't I found it to be historically accurate. Anyone who knows Texas history will pick up on the details that aren't necessarily scripted, i.e. Susanna Dickinson and Bowie's slave, the "Yellow Rose" of Texas, etc..

Good and informative movie about the passion and politics involved in forging the state of Texas. The battles of Alamo & San Jacinto presented new view points different from History books. Sam Elliott carried the movie. He was the draw I'll give it a 2 thumbs up

I like Sam Elliot but the movie didn't develop his character adequately, thus some of his character's emotive diatribe seemed misplaced. The movie portrays Houston as more of a cork bobbing with whatever the ocean does, given he begins in Tennessee, then ends up living with the Indians, then seems to bob into Texas after that.
