Member Rating:
Sergio Leone's first solo directorial effort was this colorful sword-and-sandal epic set in ancient Greece. Rory Calhoun stars as Dario, a captain in the Greek army who must travel to the island of Rhodes to destroy the huge bronze statue of Colossus, which hurls molten lead at its attackers. Dario also battles for his life in the arena and saves victims from a torture chamber before the climactic earthquake which brings the Colossus down. Many of the supporting players in this Italian-French-Spanish co-production went on to become regulars in the exploitation films of Jesus Franco. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

has to be among the best of the 60s Italian 'sword & sandals' in terms of production cost & mapower. good imagination of the Colossus statue interior (based on Liberty Statue?). DVD quality is superior than other $ store products of the same genre.

nice sets, exciting battle scenes, wooden acting....and directed by Sergio Leone in one of his earliest works, which alone makes it worthwhile.

From a civil or oher engineering view, this is really worth it and frankly, when one gives awareness of the proximity of Halicarnesses (Bodrum) and the positioning of the two for sea power during the age where ships sailed close to the coast, the talent reflected by the Colosso and the close by in time and glory, Masoleum, the logic is rather good. Both Caesar and Pompey studied there so, one may quip, Paris is worth a mass! A delight for the classical scholar and the kids will like it too as it has lots of action. Compare the civil engineering to Manchu Picchu, for example-a lost art.
