Huajie Shidai (1985)

Huajie Shidai (1985)
In this above-average drama of a hooker's life in the early '60s, Sui Mei (Pat Ha) shares a sampan with a friend in a run-down sector of Lantau Island in Hong Kong. In order to survive, she ends up working the customers at a bar in the red light district of the city. At the same time, she meets and falls in love with a half-American Chinese looking for his long-gone G.I. father. Sui Mei's life seems to go downhill from there, since this new relationship leads to a series of misfortunes. Later, setting up as a Madam herself, Sui Mei is about to encounter more violent obstacles to her "success." In the meantime, the seamier side of 1960s Hong Kong is colorfully painted in images and songs. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
