A British engineer and a young Bengali woman feel the backlash of cultural divisiveness in this uneven romantic drama. Allan (Hugh Grant) falls in love with the Gayatri (Supriya Pathak), the beautiful teenage daughter of his hostess Indira Sen (Shabana Azmi) while he recovers from an illness. When the family learns of the affair, Allan is kicked out of the house and returns to a Calcutta boarding house a heartbroken man. While the plot line sounds interesting, this movie is not. The acting is mediocre, and there are a lot of scenes that should have wound up on the editing room floor.

Two things ruined this movie for me. 1st was the camera work, it was pretty cheaply made or least it looked that way. 2nd the ending wasn't my cup of tea. Great stars, and great culture view, but isn't love suppose to win out in the end? At least I want to believe in that even though my experience doesn't show it. A ruined man, a ruined family, a ruined movie watcher. Let us all just give up...

I would have to give this movie a 1/2 star rating. The 1/2 star rating would have to come from the cast member being chosen to play "Allan". The story line is very difficult to follow. In my opinion there were too many unanswered character questions to connect the characters to the story line. By the way, who were the characters that Allan kept going back to (2 women and 1 man) and what was their role? The ending was very abrupt. Sorry Hugh, as a fan I did not like this one, but I am glad that you have some great ones to add to your cap.
