Gary Cooper stars in this broad naval farce, directed by Henry Hathaway and based upon a John W. Hazard New Yorker magazine story. Cooper plays Lieutenant John Harkness, a wet-behind-the ears naval lieutenant who is given command of his first ship. Unfortunately, not only is Harkness new to commanding a naval vessel, but the crew and his subordinate officers are also new at their jobs. Only two old deck hands know the score. And, while Harkness is trying to figure out naval protocol, he also has to deal with the contraption in the engine room, which turns out to be an elaborate steam engine that powers the ship. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Your In The Navy Now is a black and white motion picture filmed in 1951 in the naval yard in Norfolk. The film is set in WWII but this is not a combat movie. It is the story of a very inexperienced crew, 90 day wonders, who are assigned a top secret mission to test an experimental sub chaser powered by a steam engine. Gary Cooper is perfect as the captain. There is an interesting cast including Jack Warden, Lee Marvin, Eddie Albert and Jack Webb. It also features Charles Buchinsky who would later become Charles Bronson. The film is simply a WWII comedy and there are better films of the same genre like Operation Petticoat, I Was A Male War Bride, The Wackiest Ship In The Army or The Private Navy Of Sgt O'Farrell.

I thought it was an updated version not the original movie. Took me back to the past I have watched that movie so many times in the through the years.

This is an excellent comedy/drama starring Gary Cooper. The plot of the story is that Gary Cooper and his officer staff (all 90 day wonders) are directed to test an experimental steam engine on a sub-chaser and try to get it to work practically. The engine does not work right from the start and the enlisted men on the ship are not very receptive to the staff of reserve officers. Gary Cooper has to find a way to make the engine work properly and bring his crew together to work as a team. The comedy is light weight and hilarious. Recommended for those who like military farces.
