Danger UXB (1981)
Member Rating:
The 13-part Danger UXB was the third presentation in the 1980-81 season of PBS' Masterpiece Theatre. Based upon the memoirs of Major A. B. "Bill" Hartley, this British production stars Anthony Andrews as engineer Brian Ash. In the early days of World War II, Brian volunteers for the Royal Engineers' UXB, or "Unexploded Bomb", division. Making his already dangerous job doubly perilous is the fact that many of the "dead" bombs that have fallen in the London vicinity have been booby-trapped by German technicians; they can go off without warning at any time, so it's not surprising that the ranks of the UXB unit diminishes on a near-daily basis. The storyline traces Ash's rise through the ranks to Lieutenant, as well as his romance with Susan Mount (Judy Geeson). Danger UXB's American TV run extended from January 4 through March 30, 1981. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Danger UXB is 13 episodes on 4 discs. Most episodes are about 50 minutes long and there is a few extra special features on the 4th disc along with the last two shows. This was a TV series that ran on Masterpiece Theater in the 1980's. It holds up very well and does not seem dated. It tells the story of a squadron of men who defuse unexplored bombs that fell on London during the air raids of the early 1940's. It's a well done series. The Germans would continue to drop many different interesting types of bombs. Therefore the story added a scientist would would devise different methods to handle these objects and, of course, he had a beautiful daughter. There were also a few other tarts in the series which resulted in a couple of brief scenes of nudity. I was able to understand most of the language. The picture quality for an older TV series was very good. I highly recommend this set.

Being a World War II historian, I very much looked forward to a unique subject matter but I'm afraid either my hopes were too high or the movie was too bland, one or the other. I'm afraid since I am quite easily pleased when it comes to WWII films, it was definitely the latter of the two. Since their were numerous discs involved, I found myself putting other movies ahead of the next part in my queue which obviously is not a good sign. Please do not get me wrong. I do recommend it for its historical perspective but it is by no means an action thriller (although it definitely has its tense moments--of course, unexploded bombs, how could you not?!). In short, I am glad to have watched it once but I would not want to see it again like many movies higher on my list.

My husband , a history teacher with a penchant for the WWII era, put this mini-series in our queue. He watched the series on tv in the 80's and thought I might like it too. You must understand that the History Channel, especially WWII programming is on continually in our home, so I was a little less than enthusiastic to sit through another WWII series. Perhaps it was the subject matter of the true story, or the difference in the production from England or maybe I was just in the mood to sit with hubby, but I enjoyed the first disc enough to want to watch the remaining series. The character development may be a little slow but I grew to care about this group and it gives an insight as to what the citizens of London had to deal with on a daily basis. Not the romanticized version of WWII that many American movies portrayed but an interesting look as to the daily frustrations and successes of this brave and unique group of men.
