Dance with a Stranger (1985)
Member Rating:
This darkly haunting slightly fictionalized film is a retelling of the life and death of Ruth Ellis (Miranda Richardson), the last woman to be executed in England. Ellis, a divorcee and ex-prostitute works as a "hostess" in a tacky nightclub. There she meets and begins an obsessive love affair with upper-class David Blakely (Rupert Everett), who eventually discards her. Still obsessed and jealous because of David's upcoming marriage to a woman of his own class, Ellis murders him. Miranda Richardson, in a stark, knock-out performance is outstanding as the cold, calculating Ellis, unscrupulous in her use of everyone to get what she wants. Ian Holm, in an often-overlooked performance, is superb as the man who loves Ellis, supporting her and her teenage son, without ever gaining her love. He is her mainstay and the surrogate father to her teenage son, who Ellis has little time for. In his own, quiet way he is as obsessed as Ellis. The screenplay, adapted by Shelagh Delaney remains faithful to the true story, taking only minor dramatic license. Dance With a Stranger is an uncompromising look at obsessive love and its consequences on others. The story is made even more poignant because of the sad life and eventual suicide of Ellis' real son. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

Dance with a Stranger is a slight, albeit well-acted melodrama. Miranda Richardson turns in a nice performance as the ill-fated Ruth Ellis, but the script fails to buttress her performance with sufficient detail or backstory. Richardson's Ellis is a woman that allows others to delude themselves about her loyalties, and who cannot feel alive without a certain level of psycho-sexual trauma. The film unfortunately leaves out the sensational trial of Ruth Ellis, which would have provided an excellent opportunity to examine Ruth's background; as it stands, Dance with a Stranger more often recounts than reveals.

Nothing was coherent in this film. The acting was horrible, the story was boring, and there was no string tying this film together. Instead what you got was a 1000 piece puzzle where the pieces were all from other puzzles. This film was so bad that whenever my cat walked by the television his eyes would water and he would have to claw at his ears to make the vision and sound try to disappear. I have never ... I mean never experienced a film like this. I am going to end this review now because it is giving me a headache just thinking about it. This film should definitely have a Mr. Yuck sticker on it prior to renting. Also, if you get a petition in the mail shortly, it is going to be from me asking to eliminate weapons of mass destruction and replace them with Dance with a Stranger. It would cause the same amount of damage ... PEEE-EW!! In the words of Jay Sherman ... the God, the man, the myth ... "IT STINKS".

It was a long drawn out movie with a woman that was really obsessed. I rented it because I like Rupert Everett, I didn't like his role in this movie. As a actor I still like him.
